About this tour

The Southern Expressway makes this an easy day: a two-hour boat trip through the mangroves of the Madu River at Balapitiya, then Galle Fort for lunch, the maritime museum and a walk on the ramparts. We skip the fish spas and caged-animal stops that many river boats make, and we do not stop at a turtle hatchery.

  • Madu River: two hours by private boat through mangrove tunnels, with a cinnamon-island stop
  • Galle Fort: ramparts, lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church and the old Dutch hospital
  • Maritime Archaeology Museum in an old Dutch warehouse
