Best time to visit Sri Lanka: month by month

The short answer

January to March is the driest stretch on the west and south coasts, in the hills and in the Cultural Triangle. December and April are wetter there: Anuradhapura averages 225 mm in December and 180 mm in April. May to September suits the east coast and the north. October and November are wet almost everywhere. On the east coast the wettest months are November and December.

The pattern in four sentences

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island. The south-west monsoon, roughly May to September, brings rain and rough sea to the west and south coasts and the western hill slopes, while the east and north stay dry. The north-east monsoon, roughly December to February, does the reverse on a smaller scale. Two inter-monsoon periods, April and October to November, bring afternoon thunderstorms almost everywhere, and October and November are wet almost everywhere. On the east coast the wettest months are November and December.

That is why one coast is usually better than the other: west and south from December to April, east from May to September. The figures below are long-term monthly averages from Climates to Travel (read 7 November 2026; the page does not state its averaging period). Any single year can differ a lot: November 2025 ended with Cyclone Ditwah, and September 2026 brought a drought closure at Yala.

Rainfall by region, mm per month

Colombo and Galle stand for the west and south coasts; Anuradhapura for the Cultural Triangle; Nuwara Eliya and Bandarawela (near Ella) for the hills; Trincomalee for the east.

Month by month

Temperatures barely change: Colombo is 23 to 32 °C all year, the sea 27 to 30 °C. What changes is rain, sea state and crowds. Nuwara Eliya is 10 to 21 °C in January and February and Horton Plains can touch 5 °C at dawn.

What is in season

Wildlife and activity seasons are from operator pages and general guides, not from sighting logs, so treat them as rough windows. Nothing in nature is promised in any month.

  • Blue whales off Mirissa: boats run daily from November to late April; none from May to July (Raja and the Whales, read 7 November 2026).
  • Whales off Trincomalee: sources disagree, giving windows anywhere from March to October. May to August is common to all of them.
  • Elephant Gathering at Minneriya or Kaudulla: peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Which park has the elephants changes week to week with water levels.
  • Yala leopards: the dry months, February to July, are when they are seen most often. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought; the dates change each year.
  • Adam's Peak pilgrimage season: from the December full moon to the May full moon (expected 23 December 2026 to 19 May 2027; the dates are set each year and the closing date has moved before). Outside it the path is unlit and the weather usually poor.
  • Surf: Weligama and the south-west from November to April; Arugam Bay from about April to October, busiest in July and August.
  • Kalpitiya kitesurfing: mid-May to mid-October and mid-December to mid-March.

What it costs by month

Hotel prices follow the seasons more than tour prices do. On the west and south coasts, in the hills and in the Cultural Triangle, our planning rates use 1 November to 20 December and April as the base. Peak season, 10 January to 31 March, runs about 1.6 times the base at 4- and 5-star hotels and 1.3 times at simpler ones. The Christmas and New Year window, 21 December to 9 January, is about double at the top end, and most beach resorts add compulsory gala dinners on 24 and 31 December (Weligama Bay Resort: USD 70 per adult each), so we add an estimated line for those nights. May to October is about 15% below base, except that the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and Yala charge peak rates from 15 July to 31 August. The east coast runs the other way: May to September is its peak, November to March its low season, and many small places at Arugam Bay and Pasikudah close from November to March.

Arrivals follow the same shape. December 2025 was the busiest month Sri Lanka has recorded (258,928 arrivals) and May and June are the quietest (Sri Lanka tourism arrivals reports). If you want fewer people at Sigiriya and lower hotel bills, and you accept afternoon showers, late April to early July in the Cultural Triangle and the east coast is a reasonable trade.

Dates to plan around in 2027

All public holidays below are gazetted (Central Bank of Sri Lanka list, read 7 November 2026); the Perahera is not, and its dates are a projection. On every full-moon Poya day bars and liquor shops close by law and hotels do not serve alcohol in public areas; sites and restaurants stay open.

  • 13 and 14 April: Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Liquor outlets closed, most shops shut from about 12 to 15 April, hill and beach hotels full of local holidaymakers at local-holiday prices from about 10 to 18 April.
  • 19 and 20 May: Vesak. Lantern displays in Colombo and Kandy; liquor and meat shops closed for about three days.
  • 18 June: Poson Poya. Anuradhapura and Mihintale receive very large crowds for about a week.
  • Kandy Esala Perahera: projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth. The final night usually falls on Nikini Poya, which is 16 August in 2027. Kandy hotels charge multiples of normal rates on procession nights.
  • 28 October: Deepavali. 25 December: Christmas; peak-season rates from about 20 December.

Our honest summary

For a first visit covering the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hills and the south coast, late January to March is the safest bet for weather and also the most expensive and crowded. December and April come next. For the same loop at lower prices, with some afternoon rain and rough sea in the south, consider July and August and swap the south-coast beach for Trincomalee. October is the month we would avoid if you have a choice. Facts last checked 7 November 2026.
