East coast in summer: Trincomalee to Arugam Bay

The short answer

From May to September the east coast is the right beach: June averages 25 mm of rain at Trincomalee against 205 mm at Colombo, and the sea is calm. Trincomalee has Pigeon Island and whale boats, Pasikudah a shallow bay for children, Arugam Bay the surf. It is far from the south, so plan it at the end of a loop through Sigiriya or Ella, not with Galle.

Why the east in summer

The south-west monsoon, roughly May to September, brings rain and rough sea to the west and south coasts and leaves the east dry and calm. The monthly averages tell it plainly: Trincomalee gets about 70 mm in May, 25 in June, 50 in July, 65 in August and 115 in September; Pottuvil (Arugam Bay) about 15 mm in June and July; Colombo and Galle 120 to 315 mm in the same months. Hotel prices invert too. On the east coast May to September is peak season and November to March is low, when many small places at Arugam Bay and Pasikudah close altogether; Trinco Blu's cheapest month on KAYAK is November (USD 92) and its most expensive August (USD 453). The east also gets the European summer holiday crowd in July and August.

Trincomalee

A huge natural harbour with the beach suburbs of Uppuveli and Nilaveli to the north. Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat ride off Nilaveli, has blacktip reef sharks and turtles in shallow water on some mornings, not all; the near-shore coral is damaged and the reef is crowded by 10:00, so go at 08:00. It is a Category I park: about USD 71 in tickets for two adults (the vehicle fee is LKR 150 for a boat) plus about LKR 15,000 (USD 45) for a boat for up to 6 people, so about USD 59 each. Whale and dolphin boats run in the summer months (sources disagree on the exact season; May to August is common to all) at USD 60 per adult with the government wildlife fee, on small open boats; Trincomalee has many illegal whale-swim offers, which we do not sell. Dive centres move here from the west coast for April to October (two boat dives USD 95). Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock inside Fort Frederick is free and busiest at Maha Sivarathri (6 March 2027). The Kanniya hot wells and Marble Beach fill a half day.

Pasikudah

A bay so shallow and sheltered that small children can paddle a long way out, lined with a strip of resorts from comfort to 5-star. That is the whole offer: there is little independent dining or village life, the sea can be murky near the shore, and Batticaloa's Dutch fort and lagoon (about an hour) are the only excursion. Polonnaruwa is about 1h30 to 1h45, so Pasikudah also works as the beach end of a Cultural Triangle trip. Kandy is 4h30 to 5 hours away and Colombo 6h30 to 7h30.

Arugam Bay

A well-known surf point on the south-east coast, with a village of simple guesthouses and surf camps, crowded line-ups at Main Point in July and August, and Baby Point and Whiskey Point for beginners (a private lesson is about LKR 9,500, USD 29). The season is roughly April to October; most businesses shut from November to March and October is wet. Kumana National Park, Yala's quiet eastern neighbour, is a Category II park with USD 41.18 in tickets for two and a USD 95 private jeep; nesting water birds from April to July, leopards rarely, few jeeps. The Pottuvil lagoon mangrove canoe at dusk and Kudumbigala's forest hermitage are the other half days. Honest notes: it is 7 to 8 hours from Colombo and 3h15 from Ella, party noise near the main strip, and accommodation is mostly simple.

How to fit the east into a trip

The east coast does not combine with the south coast in one trip: Trincomalee to Mirissa is a full day of driving. Two shapes work. A 10-day centre-and-east loop: airport, Sigiriya (2, with the Minneriya Gathering from July), Polonnaruwa, Pasikudah or Trincomalee (3), back via Sigiriya or Anuradhapura, Kandy (2), airport. A 14-day island loop with the east-coast ending: Negombo, Wilpattu, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Arugam Bay (2), Pasikudah (1), Trincomalee (1), airport; the last day from Trincomalee to the airport is about 6 hours and needs an evening flight. Jaffna, about 5 hours north of Trincomalee, is the extension for the north; its Nallur festival runs for about 25 days from August (a travel listing gave 16 August to 12 September for 2026) (the 2027 dates are not yet announced).

What to expect, plainly

Hot: 26 to 35 °C from May to September at Trincomalee, with wind. Peak-season prices and compulsory bookings at the better resorts in July and August. Long drives to get there and back. Sea that is calm by Sri Lankan standards, which still means asking before you swim; the beaches are unsupervised. Muslim-run shops and eateries close for Eid (10 March and 17 May 2027; both dates depend on the moon sighting). Dengue is present on the east coast as everywhere; use repellent. Prices, seasons and times last checked 7 November 2026.
