Gal Oya National Park
A remote park around Senanayake Samudraya, the largest reservoir in the country, where elephants sometimes swim between islands. The park is visited by boat as much as by jeep, and the Vedda community walks are arranged through the lodges. Few visitors come here; the swimming elephants are never guaranteed.
$41.18 for two adults
Park ticket USD 12 per adult and USD 6 per child aged 6 to 12 (SAARC passports USD 10 and 5), plus USD 10 service charge and LKR 300 vehicle fee per jeep, all plus 18% VAT. Two adults sharing a jeep pay about USD 41 in park fees. Jeep hire is priced separately. Boat safaris on the reservoir are priced by the lodges and boat operators, not by the park.
Hours: Daily 6.00 am to 6.00 pm; ticket counters 6.00 am to 4.00 pm; all vehicles out by 6.00 pm.
- March to July, when the water is low and receding, gives the best chance of elephants at the shore or swimming.
- Morning and late-afternoon boat trips are calmer and cooler.
- Accommodation is very limited: the one property we found is a single lodge, so book early.
