At a glance

Ella is a small hill village on the scenic railway, with the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock and the Ella Gap view towards the south coast. The main street has become crowded and commercial, and the bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00. Afternoon rain is heavy from October to December.

Nine Arch Bridge

A nine-arched stone and brick railway viaduct in the tea and jungle between Ella and Demodara. People come to watch a train cross; the viewpoints above the bridge are lined with cafes. It is busy for most of the day.

Free entry

Free. Open access.

Hours: Open access; trains cross several times a day on the current special timetable.

  • Ask your driver for the train times on the day; the hill line ran on a special timetable of about 4 trips a day when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026.
  • Early morning is quietest. It is a 20 to 30 minute walk down from the road, or a tuk-tuk to the top path.
  • Walking on the track is common but trains come without much warning. Stay off the line.

Little Adam's Peak

An easy hill walk of 1 to 1.5 hours return from the Passara road, through tea to a ridge with views of Ella Gap and Ella Rock. Steps are cut into the last section. It is the simplest walk in Ella and suits families and people who want a view without a full hike.

Free entry

Free. No source lists a fee.

Hours: Open access.

  • Go at sunrise or late afternoon; midday is hot and the path is in the open.
  • The last part is steps; take water.

  • No fee found in the sources we read, checked 7 Nov 2026
NatureAbout 4 h on site

Ella Rock

A four-hour return hike from Ella along the railway line and up through tea and eucalyptus to a rock with a wide view over the Ella valley. The path is not well marked and people take wrong turns, which is why local guides wait at the start. It is a proper walk, with a steep final section.

No fee budgeted

No fee is budgeted. One 2026 list shows USD 3; others show none. Local guides offer their services at the start, which is a separate cost.

Hours: Open access; daylight only.

  • Start early to be down before the heat and the afternoon cloud.
  • Wear proper shoes; the upper path is loose and slippery after rain.
  • Walking along the railway is part of the route. Step well clear when a train is due.

Ravana Falls

A waterfall right beside the Ella to Wellawaya road, a short drive below Ella. It is a stop of 15 to 20 minutes on the way south to Yala or Udawalawe rather than a destination. Flow is strongest after rain; in dry months it is a thin cascade.

Free entry

Free. A roadside waterfall; no ticket.

Hours: Open access.

  • The rocks are slippery and people have been hurt climbing them. Look from the road.
  • Monkeys and vendors crowd the lay-by. Keep food out of sight.

Choose your dates and the booker shows the price for them; if a rate changes while you are booking, nothing is booked and you see the new price first. Once you book, your booking keeps its price. On a multi-day trip our 8% planning fee is added to the hotel and vehicle cost, as its own line.

Ella is busy in November to March and again in July and August. If a named hotel costs more than the rate shown then, we book one of the same standard in the same area at this rate. Rates for the same standard run 30 to 60% above Kandy. Nine Skies, the Resplendent Ceylon bungalow at Demodara, costs about twice the luxury rate.
