Tea and trains, 6 days

Estate bungalow, factories, Pekoe Trail, the hill train

Tea and trains, 6 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $601 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jan to Apr, Jul to Sep, it costs $582 to $698 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country), Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, in that order. The longest drive is on day 5, from Ella to Kandy, about 4 h 30 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

Six days in the tea country: a planter's bungalow at Hatton with a factory tour and a guided Pekoe Trail stage, Nuwara Eliya's high estates, the Nanu Oya to Ella train, the Halpewatte factory and a tea-plucking morning above Ella, and a night in Kandy before the airport. The loop runs up through Kitulgala and comes back from Ella through Kandy, so no drive is longer than about 4 hours 30 minutes. The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, and the trip is written for that; if the section reopens, more of it can go by train.

  • A night in a tea-estate bungalow above Castlereagh reservoir
  • Factory tour and tasting with a planter at Hatton
  • A guided Pekoe Trail stage through the estates
  • Pedro estate factory at Nuwara Eliya
  • Nanu Oya to Ella train, reserved seat
  • Tea plucking and the Halpewatte factory above Ella
  • Temple of the Tooth in Kandy

  2. Day 2: Pekoe Trail stage, then Nuwara Eliya

A guided stage of the Pekoe Trail through the Bogawantalawa or Dickoya estates, four to seven hours depending on the stage; we confirm the stage and the guide when you book, and check the trail's alert page first. Then 1 hour 25 minutes to Nuwara Eliya, at about 1,900 m and cold at night.

    Road:
Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country) to Nuwara Eliya, about 1 h 30 min, 41 km

Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. Good to know

Pace

Day 1 is about 3 hours 55 minutes and day 5 about 4 hours 30 minutes on hill roads; the rest are short. One full day's walk on day 2.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April and July to September.
  • Harder months: October to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.

Stop by stop

Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country)

  • Outside the December to May season the path is unlit, the tea shops are shut and cloud usually hides the sunrise. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.
  • The climb is hard on the knees and the descent is the painful part. The top is cold and windy, 5 to 10 °C.
  • On Poya days and weekends from January to April the queue is shoulder to shoulder and you may not reach the summit by sunrise; Medin Poya (22 March 2027) is the busiest day.
  • The Hatton railway was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Pekoe Trail guided stage: Four to seven hours of walking on estate roads and footpaths with some climbs.
  • Pekoe Trail guided stage: On 6 November 2026 stage 2 was closed and eight stages were on amber alert for the north-east monsoon. Status changes weekly.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
  • Inside 24 hours, tell us at once: your driver has held those days for you and turned other work away.
  • Your driver's name and vehicle plate come by 20:00 the evening before the trip, or within 30 minutes of a later booking.

Read the cancellation policy

Children and residents

  • Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed. Children 6 to 11 sharing a room pay a small supplement. From 12, hotels count a child as an adult.
  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

Why does the train only run from Nanu Oya?

The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and an unfinished bridge rebuild. If it reopens, the Kandy leg can go by train too.

Which class will we get on the train?

Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised. We book first or second class, whichever is available, and tell you which. If no seat is left, we tell you, your driver takes you by road instead, and you do not pay for the seat.

How long is the Pekoe Trail stage?

A stage takes four to seven hours on estate roads and footpaths with a guide. We pick a stage to match your fitness when you book, and some stages close after landslides, so we check the trail's alert page before you set off.
