Sri Lanka highlights, 5 days

Sigiriya, Kandy and the tea country in four nights

Sri Lanka highlights, 5 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $534 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Dec to Apr, it costs $525 to $647 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, in that order. The longest drive is on day 5, from Nuwara Eliya to the airport, about 5 h. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

The shortest version of the classic loop: two nights at Sigiriya for the rock and an elephant safari, a night in Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth, and a night in Nuwara Eliya's tea country before the drive back. It fits a week's holiday with flights at each end. The last day is about 5 hours on the hill road to the airport, so it only works with an evening flight; the alternative is to add a sixth day on the coast. Expect an early start for the rock and a winding road up to Nuwara Eliya.

  • Sigiriya Rock at opening time
  • Village lunch and a Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari
  • Dambulla cave temple on the way to Kandy
  • Temple of the Tooth at the evening puja, Kandyan dance
  • Peradeniya botanical gardens
  • Tea factory and tasting on the Ramboda road
  1. Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya

About 3 hours 45 minutes from the airport to Sigiriya. If you arrive in time, Pidurangala Rock takes about an hour to climb and looks across at Sigiriya at sunset. After a late flight it waits until tomorrow evening.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 3 h 45 min, 145 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Pidurangala Rock
  2. Day 2: Sigiriya Rock, village lunch and elephant safari

Climb Sigiriya Rock from the 07:00 counter opening; it takes 2 to 3 hours and is hot and crowded by 10:00. A village tour with a bullock cart, catamaran and rice-and-curry lunch fills the late morning. At 15:00 a private jeep goes to Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, whichever has the elephants that week.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Sigiriya Rock Fortress
    Optional extras, not included:
Hot-air balloon flight over Dambulla and Sigiriya ($250 per person for two)
  3. Day 3: Dambulla caves and on to Kandy

Dambulla's five painted caves first (about 90 minutes), then the A9 to Kandy: 2 hours 45 minutes of driving, 4 to 5 hours door to door with a spice garden and lunch. In Kandy there is a walk round the lake, a Kandyan dance show at 17:00 and the 18:30 puja at the Temple of the Tooth, which is crowded and loud with drums.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Kandy, about 2 h 45 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Activities, included:
    Kandyan dance show
  4. Day 4: Peradeniya gardens and the climb to Nuwara Eliya

Two hours in the Peradeniya botanical gardens, then the A5 up the Ramboda Pass to Nuwara Eliya, 2 hours 45 minutes of hairpins (motion sickness is common) with a stop at Ramboda Falls and a tea factory for the tour and tasting. Nuwara Eliya is about 1,900 m up and cold at night, so bring a jacket. A walk round Gregory Lake before dinner.

    Road:
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, about 2 h 45 min, 76 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
    Activities, included:
    Tea factory tour and tasting
  5. Day 5: Down to the airport via Hatton and Kitulgala

The road down through Hatton and Kitulgala to the airport is about 5 hours of driving, a long last day that only suits a flight after about 19:00. There is a lunch stop at Kitulgala, where 90 minutes of white-water rafting can be added. Horton Plains at dawn is possible as an extra but pushes the airport arrival into the evening.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 5 h, 154 km
    Optional extras, not included:
White-water rafting on the Kelani River ($30 per person for two), Horton Plains and World's End walk ($36 per person for two)

Good to know

Pace

Day 5 is about 5 hours on a mountain road and needs an evening flight; days 1 and 3 are 3 to 4 hours each.

When to go

  • Best months: December to April.
  • Harder months: October to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.

  • Inside 24 hours, tell us at once: your driver has held those days for you and turned other work away.

Children and residents

  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

Our flight leaves at midday on day 5. Does this work?

No. Nuwara Eliya to the airport is about 5 hours. Either add a sixth day with a night at Negombo or on the coast, or drop Nuwara Eliya and spend night 4 in Kandy, 3 hours 15 minutes from the airport. For either, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

Is the train included?

Not in this tour. The scenic section runs from Nanu Oya to Ella, which is further east than this loop goes. The 7-day classic includes it.

What should we wear at the temples?

Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the door; white or light colours are usual at the Temple of the Tooth. Caves and dagobas have hot stone floors, so bring socks.
