Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

Sigiriya Rock Fortress costs $35 per foreign adult (Central Cultural Fund price list, checked 7 Nov 2026). Plan 2 to 3 nights here, and the good months are Jan to Apr, Jun to Sep. Sigiriya is 145 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 3 h 45 min by road, and is known for Sigiriya Rock, the Pidurangala viewpoint and the Dambulla cave temple.

At a glance

Sigiriya is the 5th-century rock fortress with its frescoes, mirror wall and water gardens, and the usual base for the Cultural Triangle. From here Dambulla's cave temple is 25 to 35 minutes, Polonnaruwa 1h15 to 1h30, and the Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu elephant parks are reached from Habarana, 20 to 30 minutes away. The rock is a climb of about 1,200 steps on exposed metal stairs; go at opening time to avoid the heat and the queues.

Month by month

  • Good month
  • A real drawback: heavy rain, rough sea or a park closure
  • Blank: neither

Months with a real drawback: Oct to Nov.

Who it suits

  • First-time visitors
  • Families
  • Anyone combining culture with an elephant safari

The downsides

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Things to do in Sigiriya

  • Climb Sigiriya Rock at opening time (about 1,200 steps, 2 to 3 hours)
  • Pidurangala Rock for sunrise or sunset
  • Dambulla cave temple: five painted caves with about 150 Buddha images
  • Afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, chosen on the day
  • Village tour by bullock cart and catamaran with a home-cooked lunch
  • Polonnaruwa by bicycle, 1h15 to 1h30 each way
  • Ritigala forest monastery and the Namal Uyana rose-quartz hill
  • Hot-air balloon flights, roughly November to April

Sights and entrance fees

Fees last checked 7 November 2026. Tickets are in the price of a tour when its itinerary lists them. Rupee fees converted at LKR 332.5 to USD 1 (XE mid-market rate, 6 Nov 2026). Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Heritage siteAbout 3 h on site

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A 5th-century palace built on top of a rock, with the frescoes, the mirror wall and the lion's paws on the way up, and water gardens at the base. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most expensive ticket on the Central Cultural Fund's price list. The climb is about 1,200 steps, much of it on exposed metal stairways.

$70 for two adults

USD 35 per adult, USD 20 for children 6 to 12 and for SAARC passport holders, paid in rupees at the gate. The Sigiriya Museum is included.

Hours: Ticket counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm (official). Earlier starts are reported locally; we confirm before promising a sunrise climb.

  • Start at opening time. Queues build from 9.00 to 11.00 am and the rock is very hot after 10.00 am.
  • The upper stairways are steep and open to the drop. People with vertigo or weak knees find them hard.
  • Wasps sometimes close the top section for an hour or more. Keep quiet on the stairs and do not run.
  • Carry water and a hat. Shoulders and knees need not be covered here, unlike at temples.

Official online tickets

ViewpointAbout 2 h on site

Pidurangala Rock

The rock opposite Sigiriya, with the classic view of the fortress from its flat summit. The path starts at a temple, passes a reclining Buddha and ends with a short scramble over boulders. Most people climb it for sunrise or sunset.

$6.02 for two adults

LKR 1,000 per person, collected by the Pidurangala temple at the trailhead. A child rate of LKR 500 is reported but the age band is not published.

Hours: About 5.00 am to 6.00 pm.

  • Cover shoulders and knees for the temple section at the bottom; you can uncover once past it.
  • The last ten minutes is a scramble over large rocks. Wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
  • Bring a torch for a sunrise climb. The summit is busy at sunrise in season.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Five painted caves under an overhanging rock, with about 150 Buddha images and ceilings covered in murals. It is a UNESCO site and a working temple. A long flight of steps leads up from the ticket office; the town below is a truck junction with little charm.

$18.05 for two adults

LKR 3,000 per adult (SAARC LKR 2,500). Children are reported free, but no official price list exists. Shoe storage at the top is a small extra, LKR 20 to 200.

Hours: 7.00 am to 7.00 pm; ticket counter closes 5.00 pm (secondary sources; some say 6.00 pm).

  • Shoulders and knees must be covered, and shoes come off at the top. Socks help on hot stone.
  • Go early or late in the day; the steps are in full sun at midday.
  • Monkeys take food and loose items. Keep bags closed.
  • The price rose from LKR 2,000 to 3,000 during 2025 and many websites still show the old figure. We budget LKR 3,000 and show it on your receipt.

MuseumAbout 45 min on site

Dambulla Museum

A small Central Cultural Fund museum near the cave temple about the wall paintings of Sri Lanka, with reproductions and explanations of how the murals were made. It is a modest place; most visitors skip it unless they want background before the caves.

$6 for two adults

USD 3 per adult, USD 1.50 for children 6 to 12 and SAARC passport holders. Not included in the cave temple ticket.

Hours: CCF counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  • Worth 30 to 40 minutes if you want to understand the murals before climbing to the caves.

Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Tombs

A prehistoric burial ground a few kilometres from Dambulla, with stone-slab cists from before the Anuradhapura period. It is quiet and rarely visited. A short stop for people interested in early history; there is little to see for anyone else.

$6 for two adults

USD 3 per adult, USD 1.50 for children 6 to 12 and SAARC passport holders.

Hours: CCF counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  • Combine with the Dambulla caves; it is on the Kurunegala road a few minutes from town.

Namal Uyana Rose Quartz Mountain

An ironwood (na) forest and a pink quartz ridge north of Dambulla, looked after by a monk. A walk through the forest leads to the quartz outcrop with views over the dry-zone plain. It takes about two hours including the walk in.

$12 for two adults

USD 6 per adult, USD 3 for children 6 to 12 and SAARC passport holders.

Hours: CCF counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  • Go in the morning before the quartz heats up.
  • Wear shoes with grip; the quartz is uneven and slippery after rain.

Heritage siteAbout 2 h on site

Ritigala Forest Monastery

The ruins of a forest monastery on the slopes of a strict nature reserve between Habarana and Anuradhapura. A stone path leads past a bathing tank, meditation platforms and a long walkway through dry forest. There are no statues or paintings; the appeal is the setting and the quiet.

$12 for two adults

USD 6 per adult, USD 3 for children 6 to 12 and SAARC passport holders.

Hours: CCF counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  • The path climbs gently for about a kilometre; allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Go in the morning. The forest is cooler then and the reserve closes in the late afternoon.
  • Few visitors come here. It suits people who have already seen the big sites.

Herd of wild Asian elephants with calves walking across open grassland at Minneriya
National parkAbout 3 h on site

Minneriya National Park

A dry-zone park around the Minneriya reservoir, known for the elephant gathering on the receding shore from about July to October. Guides estimate 150 to 300 or more elephants then, against 10 to 30 in the wetter months. Outside the gathering the herds move to Kaudulla or Hurulu, and the park your tracker chooses depends on water levels that week.

$71.86 for two adults

Park ticket USD 25 per adult and USD 15 per child aged 6 to 12 (SAARC passports USD 20 and 10), plus USD 10 service charge and LKR 300 vehicle fee per jeep, all plus 18% VAT. Two adults sharing a jeep pay about USD 72 in park fees. Jeep hire is priced separately.

Hours: Daily 6.00 am to 6.00 pm; ticket counters 6.00 am to 4.00 pm; all vehicles out by 6.00 pm.

  • Afternoon drives are the usual choice for elephants at the tank; mornings are quieter.
  • In August and September dozens of jeeps line the shore. Expect company.
  • Large herds gather from July to October, but numbers vary day to day and nothing is guaranteed.
  • The park may close or be swapped for Kaudulla when the water rises; we decide on the day.

National parkAbout 3 h on site

Kaudulla National Park

Minneriya's neighbour to the north, around the Kaudulla reservoir. Elephant herds move between the two parks and Hurulu with the water level, so Kaudulla is often the better choice late in the gathering season, from about September. The scenery is similar: open grassland at the tank edge and dry forest behind.

  • Trackers decide between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu on the day; we follow their advice.
  • Afternoon drives give the best chance of elephants at the water.
  • Fewer jeeps than Minneriya on most days, but still busy in September.

National parkAbout 3 h on site

Hurulu Eco Park

A forest reserve near Habarana used for elephant drives when the herds are not at Minneriya or Kaudulla, mainly from about November to May. The scrub is thicker than at the tank-side parks, so elephants are seen at closer range but in smaller groups. Trackers choose between the three on the day.

$20 for two adults

About USD 10 per adult and USD 5 per child before jeep hire, collected by the Forest Department at the gate (one secondary list; no age band is published, so children are budgeted at the adult rate). This is a Forest Department reserve, not a Wildlife Department park, so the park-ticket formula does not apply. This is a budget figure.

Hours: 6.00 am to 6.00 pm (secondary source).

  • Numbers are smaller than at the Minneriya gathering, and sightings are not guaranteed.
  • Afternoon drives are the usual choice.
  • The tracks are rough; the drive is bumpier than Minneriya.
