Anuradhapura Sacred City
The first capital of the island, from about the 4th century BC, and a living pilgrimage city. The ticket covers Jetavanaramaya, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Abhayagiri with the Samadhi Buddha and Twin Ponds, and two site museums. The sites are spread over several kilometres, so you move between them by car or bicycle.
$60 for two adults
USD 30 per adult, USD 15 for children 6 to 12 and SAARC passport holders. The Sri Maha Bodhi and Isurumuniya are run by the temples and charge separately, LKR 200 to 1,000 each, paid at the door.
Hours: Ticket counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm (official); secondary sources report 7.30 am to 6.00 pm.
- Shoes come off at every dagoba and the stone is hot. Carry socks.
- Cover shoulders and knees; white clothing is usual for pilgrims but not required.
- The city is very crowded for a week around Poson Poya in June.
- Less visually dramatic than Sigiriya; it rewards people with an interest in history and Buddhism.
