Slow travel with the north and east, 21 days

Three weeks: Jaffna, Trincomalee and the classic loop

Slow travel with the north and east, 21 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $2,411 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included, and Udawattakele forest ticket and temple-run sites paid there. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jun to Aug, it costs $2,383 to $2,472 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Negombo, Kalpitiya, Wilpattu National Park, Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Trincomalee (Nilaveli and Uppuveli), Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), Galle (with Unawatuna), in that order. The longest drive is on day 9, from Jaffna to Trincomalee, about 5 h. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

Three weeks that add the Tamil north and the east coast to the classic loop: Kalpitiya and Wilpattu, two nights at Anuradhapura, three in Jaffna with an island day, three at Trincomalee for Pigeon Island, then Sigiriya, Kandy, the hills, Yala and Galle. Most places get two or three nights. The one long transfer is Jaffna to Trincomalee, about 5 hours; the rest are under 4 hours. It runs well from June to August, when the north and east are dry; a September start reaches Yala during its usual closure, when the safari needs a substitute such as Udawalawe. From February to April it also works, though Trincomalee's sea is only settling in March.

  • Kalpitiya's lagoon and a double Wilpattu safari
  • Anuradhapura by bicycle and Mihintale
  • Jaffna: Nallur Kovil, the fort and a ferry to Nainativu
  • Pigeon Island snorkelling and Koneswaram temple
  • Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and an elephant safari
  • Kandy, Horton Plains and the train to Ella
  • Two Yala safaris and Galle Fort
  1. Day 1: Airport to Negombo

A 25-minute transfer and a rest day at Negombo: the beach, the Dutch canal, a seafood dinner. The beach is average; it is a soft landing.

Bandaranaike International Airport to Negombo, about 30 min, 11 km
    Overnight:
    Negombo
  2. Day 2: Up the coast to Kalpitiya

About 2 hours 45 minutes up the A3 to the Kalpitiya peninsula: flat, sandy, basic, with a lagoon and few restaurants outside the hotels. A lagoon afternoon by kayak or on foot. Dolphin boats run from about September to April (calmest from November) and kitesurfing from mid-May to mid-October and mid-December to mid-March; either can be added for the next morning.

    Road:
Negombo to Kalpitiya, about 2 h 45 min, 128 km
    Overnight:
    Kalpitiya
    Optional extras, not included:

  3. Day 3: Wilpattu, afternoon safari

About 2 hours 30 minutes via Puttalam to Wilpattu's gate. Simple, comfort and superior hotels here are in or near Anuradhapura, about an hour from the gate; the one lodge we name at the gate is the luxury choice. A 14:30 private jeep drive through forest and villus; leopards and sloth bears are seen on some drives, not all.

    Road:
Kalpitiya to Wilpattu National Park, about 2 h 30 min, 110 km
    Activities, included:
    Wilpattu safari (private jeep)
  4. Day 4: Dawn safari, then Anuradhapura

A second Wilpattu drive from 06:00, when the park is quietest. Under an hour to Anuradhapura in the afternoon and sunset by Tissa Wewa.

    Anuradhapura
    Sights, tickets included:
    Anuradhapura Sacred City, Mihintale

Anuradhapura to Jaffna, about 4 h, 204 km
    Overnight:
    Jaffna
    Sights, tickets included:
    Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil
  7. Day 7: Jaffna heritage day

A guided half day through the fort, the rebuilt Public Library, the market and the kovils, with a stop for Rio ice cream. Crab curry for dinner. Upscale hotels are few here and the beaches are modest.

    Overnight:
    Jaffna
    Sights, tickets included:
    Jaffna Fort
    Activities, included:
    Jaffna heritage half day
  8. Day 8: Islands day: Nainativu or Delft

A full day over the causeways to the Kurikadduwan jetty and by ferry to Nainativu for the Nagadeepa temple and the Nagapooshani Amman kovil, or to Delft for wild ponies and the Dutch fort. Ferries fill on Poya days and the sea can be rough in windy months; we confirm the timetable the week before. Casuarina Beach on the way back.

    Overnight:
    Jaffna
  9. Day 9: Transfer day to Trincomalee

The one long drive of the trip: about 5 hours via Vavuniya and Horowupotana, with lunch at Vavuniya. There is no shorter road. The beach at Nilaveli or Uppuveli for the late afternoon.

    Road:
Jaffna to Trincomalee (Nilaveli and Uppuveli), about 5 h, 231 km
  10. Day 10: Pigeon Island and Koneswaram

A boat to Pigeon Island at 08:00 to snorkel before the reef crowds up by 10:00, with blacktip reef sharks and turtles on some mornings, not all; the near-shore coral is damaged. Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock and the deer of Fort Frederick at sunset.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Koneswaram Temple
    Activities, included:
    Pigeon Island snorkelling
  11. Day 11: Free day on the east coast

A day on the beach, or a whale and dolphin boat (roughly May to August; sightings vary) or two dives. Kanniya hot wells and Marble Beach are short drives.

    Optional extras, not included:
Whale and dolphin watching from Trincomalee ($60 per person for two), Two boat dives at Trincomalee (certified divers) ($95 per person for two)
  12. Day 12: Inland to Sigiriya

About 2 hours 15 minutes via Habarana; elephants cross the road at dusk. Pidurangala Rock in the late afternoon for the view across to Sigiriya.

  14. Day 14: Dambulla and Kandy

Dambulla's painted caves, then 2 hours 45 minutes to Kandy. The dance show at 17:00 and the Temple of the Tooth puja at 18:30.

    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Activities, included:
    Kandyan dance show
  15. Day 15: Kandy day

Peradeniya gardens, the lake and Udawattakele forest (ticket paid at the gate), and an evening cooking class. In August the Esala Perahera fills the city (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth), hotel prices multiply and central roads close from mid-afternoon.

    Kandy
    Sights, tickets included:

    Optional extras, not included:
Knuckles Range day hike ($80 per person for two)

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Ella, about 2 h, 54 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
  18. Day 18: Ella walks and Lipton's Seat

    Overnight:
    Ella
  19. Day 19: Down to Yala

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Tissamaharama and a 14:30 Yala Block 1 safari. Leopards on some drives, not all. During the September to October closure Block 1 is shut: If part of your plan cannot go ahead, we offer another date or a substitute and show any price difference. You decide whether to take it. For this drive that is Udawalawe or Block 5.

    Road:
Ella to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 2 h 15 min, 88 km

Priced for a start date in each period. Your dates may fall across two seasons, so check them in the price box. East-coast hotels follow their own calendar: their busy months are May to September. Some stops here cost more in their own busy weeks, such as mid-July to August. The Christmas and New Year price includes our estimate of any compulsory gala dinner on 24 or 31 December. November leaves out Pigeon Island snorkelling, which does not run then. Christmas and New Year leaves out Pigeon Island snorkelling, which does not run then.

Good to know

Pace

One transfer of about 5 hours (day 9, Jaffna to Trincomalee); otherwise under 4 hours. Dawn starts on days 4, 5, 13, 17, 18 and 20.

When to go

  • Best months: June to August.
  • Harder months: October to December. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Negombo

  • The sea is rough and brown from May to October, and the beach is average at any time of year.
  • Touts work the beach road.
  • Not worth more than a night for most visitors; it is a convenient stop, not a destination.

Kalpitiya

  • October and November are the wet months here (about 230 to 255 mm).
  • No dolphin boats during the south-west monsoon, roughly May to August; the sea is too rough.
  • Basic infrastructure, few restaurants outside hotels, and not a classic swimming beach.
  • Dolphins are not guaranteed on any trip.

Wilpattu National Park

  • Heavy north-east monsoon rain from November to January can flood the park and close it for days.
  • Leopards and bears are seen on some drives, not all; the forest is thick and sightings take patience.
  • Long, bumpy drives inside the park; a full day is tiring but far more rewarding than a half day.
  • Sloth bears are most often seen from May to September.

Anuradhapura

  • October to December are wet (about 225 to 280 mm a month).
  • Sites are spread out and hot; shoes come off on hot stone, so carry socks.
  • Very crowded in the week around Poson Poya (18 June 2027).
  • March and April reach about 35 °C.

Jaffna

  • October to December are very wet; November averages about 435 mm.
  • A long way from everything: 8 to 9 hours by road from Colombo and about 4 hours from Anuradhapura. FitsAir's winter 2026/27 schedule lists no Jaffna flights, so we treat flights as unavailable unless another airline confirms one.
  • Very hot from April to August; limited upscale hotels; beaches are modest.
  • Island ferries fill on Poya days and the sea can be rough in windy months.

Trincomalee (Nilaveli and Uppuveli)

  • Wet and rough from November to January (about 340 to 375 mm a month in November and December); many beach hotels close.
  • Pigeon Island's near-shore coral is damaged and the reef is crowded by 10:00.
  • Far from the south coast; Trincomalee and Mirissa do not combine well in one trip.
  • Sources disagree on the whale season; we say roughly May to August, the months all of them share, and do not quote sighting rates.

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Galle (with Unawatuna)

  • Heavy rain in May (about 315 mm) and again in October and November; Unawatuna's sea is rough from May to October.
  • The fort is expensive by Sri Lankan standards and hot and humid at midday.
  • No real beach inside the fort; Unawatuna's beach has narrowed with erosion and gets crowded.
  • Crowded at weekends.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep), Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep), Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep): Usually best in the dry months from February to October; heavy rain from November to January floods some tracks. Seasons are from general guides, not the park.
  • Anuradhapura sacred city by bicycle: About 15 km of flat cycling in the heat.
  • Jaffna islands day: Nainativu and Delft: Long day in heat with open ferry crossings of up to an hour each way.
  • Jaffna islands day: Nainativu and Delft: Rough ferry crossings and cancellations are more likely in the north-east monsoon, October to December.
  • Pigeon Island snorkelling: You must be able to swim. Life jackets are provided on the boat.
  • Pigeon Island snorkelling: Calm from about May to September. Boats do not go out in rough sea, and from November to January the sea is rough with the north-east monsoon, so we do not sell those months.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: About 9 km on uneven ground at 2,100 m; allow three hours of walking.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: Plastic, lighters and cigarettes are checked at the gate.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: January to April is usually the clearest. Mist can hide World's End in any month, and the walk still runs in rain.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Questions about this tour

Is there a flight to Jaffna to avoid the drives?

Not that we can confirm. FitsAir's winter 2026/27 schedule lists no Jaffna flights, so we plan by road and treat flights as unavailable unless an airline confirms one.

Why June to August and not the winter?

The north and east are dry then and Trincomalee's sea is calm. A September start is fine for the north and east but reaches Yala during its usual closure: If part of your plan cannot go ahead, we offer another date or a substitute and show any price difference. You decide whether to take it. For the safari that is Udawalawe. From February to April the loop also works, but the east coast is only settling; to give Trincomalee's nights to Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

Can we add Arugam Bay or Gal Oya?

Yes, in an east-coast variant that goes Ella to Arugam Bay to Gal Oya; between Trincomalee and Sigiriya it is too far. Use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices it before you book.

How long is the longest drive?

Jaffna to Trincomalee, about 5 hours with lunch at Vavuniya. Everything else is under 4 hours, and most days are under 3.
