Negombo

Plan 1 night here, and the good months are Dec to Apr. Negombo is 11 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 30 min by road, and is known for the Lellama fish market, its Dutch canal and its Catholic churches.

At a glance

Negombo is the beach town closest to the airport, with a fishing harbour, a Dutch-era canal and a row of Catholic churches that earned it the name Little Rome. Most visitors use it for one night at the start or end of a trip. The beach is average, and the sea is rough and brown from May to October.

Month by month

  • Good month
  • A real drawback: heavy rain, rough sea or a park closure
  • Blank: neither

Months with a real drawback: May to Oct.

Who it suits

  • Late arrivals and early departures
  • Families easing into the trip
  • Anyone wanting a first night by the sea rather than in Colombo

The downsides

  • The sea is rough and brown from May to October, and the beach is average at any time of year.
  • Touts work the beach road.
  • Not worth more than a night for most visitors; it is a convenient stop, not a destination.

Negombo is the usual first or last night because the airport is close. It is a convenient stop near the airport rather than a beach destination in itself.
