Sigiriya day trip from Colombo: times and cost
The short answer
Yes, you can see Sigiriya Rock and the Dambulla cave temple in one day from Colombo: leave at 05:00, climb at about 09:30, back by about 20:00, with about 9 hours in the car. With Majeste, for two adults the private car and both tickets cost about USD 249 (USD 125 each) as of 7 November 2026. It is worth it only if you cannot spare a night.

The honest answer first
It works, and many people do it, but it is a long day: Colombo to Sigiriya is 168 km and about 4h30, mostly on ordinary two-lane road (the Central Expressway is open only from Mirigama to Kurunegala; the Pothuhera to Rambukkana section is targeted for March 2027). You will climb the rock in the late-morning heat rather than at opening, and you will be in the car for about 9 hours. If you can spare a night, the two-day version puts you on the rock at 07:00, adds Pidurangala at sunset and an elephant safari. It costs more: for two in comfort hotels, about USD 368 without the safari and USD 515 with it, against USD 249 for the day trip, as of 7 November 2026. Those overnight figures include our 8% Trip planning and support fee on vehicle and hotels. We suggest the overnight version first.
The day, hour by hour
Private car with driver, two adults, from a Colombo hotel. Times are planning times, not promises; add 20 to 40 minutes if you leave Colombo after 07:00.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 05:00 | Pickup in Colombo. Breakfast box from the hotel or a stop on the road. |
| 09:30 | Sigiriya ticket office (counters 07:00 to 17:00). Climb: about 1,200 steps past the frescoes, mirror wall and lion's paws; allow 2.5 to 3 hours. Hot and exposed after 10:00. |
| 12:30 | Rice and curry lunch near Sigiriya or Dambulla (not included; a few dollars). |
| 14:00 | Dambulla cave temple: five painted caves up a long flight of steps; 1 to 1.5 hours. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off. |
| 15:30 | Leave for Colombo. 4 to 5 hours with a tea stop. |
| 19:30 to 20:30 | Back at the hotel. |
What it costs
Our price for the day, as of 7 November 2026, with the car, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and both entrance tickets. Day tours carry no planning and support fee. Lunch, a site guide at the rock and tips are not included.
| From | Distance and hours | 2 adults in a car | 4 adults in a van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo | 340 km, about 15 hours | USD 249 (USD 125 each) | USD 380 (USD 95 each) |
| Negombo or the airport | 300 km, about 13.5 to 14 hours | USD 231 (USD 116 each) | USD 358 (USD 90 each) |
| Kandy | 180 km, about 13.5 hours | USD 177 (USD 89 each) | USD 292 (USD 73 each) |
Where the money goes
For two from Colombo: USD 160.50 for the car and driver (our day rate of USD 75 plus 190 km beyond the 150 km day allowance at USD 0.45), USD 70 for two Sigiriya tickets (USD 35 per adult, set by the Central Cultural Fund and paid in rupees at the gate) and USD 18.05 for two Dambulla tickets (LKR 3,000 each). Children aged 6 to 12 pay USD 20 at Sigiriya; under-6s are reported free by secondary lists, not on the CCF price page. Marketplace listings for the same day run from USD 55 per person at the large-group tier without tickets to USD 170 to 265 per person all-inclusive, and most leave the tickets out, which is where the surprises come from.
What to expect at the rock
Six things nobody mentions in the listing.
- Queues build from 09:00 to 11:00 at the ticket office and on the narrow stairways. On a day trip you arrive in that window.
- The upper stairways are steep metal flights open to the drop. People with vertigo or weak knees find them hard; there is no lift or alternative route.
- Wasps sometimes close the top section for an hour or more. Keep quiet on the stairs.
- No flash photography at the frescoes. Sigiriya is an archaeological site, so temple dress rules are not usually applied there; Dambulla's are.
- Carry a litre of water each and a hat. The Sigiriya Museum is included in the ticket.
- Pidurangala Rock opposite (LKR 1,000, about 45 minutes up) gives the view of Sigiriya itself and is the better choice for anyone who does not want the crowds, but it does not fit a day trip from Colombo.
Variations and seasons
Adding a Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari at 15:00 makes it an 18-hour day; we do not recommend it from Colombo but it works from Kandy, and the safari is the reason to stay a night. Polonnaruwa is a further 1h25 each way and does not fit. March and April are very hot (35 °C); October and November are the wettest months with afternoon storms; the Gathering of elephants peaks in August and September if you add the overnight.
