Private driver in Sri Lanka: cost and how it works

The short answer

With Majeste, a car with an English-speaking driver costs USD 75 a day and a 6-seat van USD 99, with fuel, tolls, parking, the driver's meals and lodging and 150 km a day pooled across the trip. Multi-day trips add our 8% planning and support fee. The market runs from about USD 50 to 120 a day. Tickets, your meals and tips are extra.

What it costs

Our rates per touring day, as of 7 November 2026: car (Toyota Prius, Axio or similar, air-conditioned, 2 people comfortably, 3 at most) USD 75; van (Toyota KDH or similar, 6 seats, 5 comfortably) USD 99; large van (9 seats) USD 119; mini coach (up to 14, 12 comfortably) USD 175. Each day includes 150 km, pooled across the whole trip, so a short day banks distance for a long one. Beyond the pool: USD 0.45 per km for the car, USD 0.55 for the van, USD 0.65 for the large van, USD 0.90 for the coach.

Two things change that price. On a multi-day trip we add Trip planning and support, our fee of 8% on the vehicle and hotels, shown as its own line, so a car day costs USD 81 in practice. On a day tour of up to 6 hours door to door we charge a half-day rate, 60% of the day rate, which is USD 45 for the car with a 90 km allowance. Some day tours have no car charge at all because the jeep or boat collects you.

For context, a directory of 508 drivers publishing their own multi-day rates (updated 6 November 2026) averages USD 65 a day for a standard sedan and USD 90 for a 6-seat van, with about 150 km a day. One rent-a-car firm's published card, read on 7 November 2026, gives LKR 17,500 to 19,500 plus 18% VAT for a mid-size car with driver, with 100 km a day and the driver's room and meals billed separately. Marketplace listings run USD 65 to 118 a day for a car. Rough Guides gives USD 40 to 80. Ceylon Route, May 2026, warns that quotes of USD 30 to 40 a day are usually subsidised by commissions from shops the driver takes you to.

What the rate includes, and what it never does

Read any driver quote against this list before you compare prices.

  • Included with us: the vehicle, the driver, fuel for the pooled distance, expressway tolls, parking, the driver's meals and accommodation, and a meet-and-greet at the airport.
  • Added by us on multi-day trips: Trip planning and support, 8% of the vehicle and hotels. It is our fee, for planning, booking every hotel and ticket, and our team on WhatsApp, 07:00 to 21:00 Sri Lanka time, throughout the trip. Sights and activities are at their listed price, except the hill train seat, which includes our booking charge.
  • Not included in any driver rate: entrance tickets, your meals and drinks, tips, your hotels (unless you book a tour with us, where hotels are a separate priced block).
  • Common gaps in cheap quotes: tolls (LKR 400 for the airport expressway, more for the south), the driver's lodging (LKR 4,000 a night where the hotel gives none), distance beyond 100 km a day, and a 'day' defined as 8 hours.
  • Plan on a touring day of up to about 10 hours between about 06:00 and 20:00. Very long days, such as a dawn safari followed by a 4-hour drive, are fine when they are in the plan from the start.

Driver, site guide or national guide

A driver drives and handles tickets and logistics. A national guide travels with you in addition to the driver, at USD 50 to 100 a day, from one published estimate. Site guides work at individual sites such as Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa for a fee at the gate.

With us you get an English-speaking driver. We do not call our drivers guides, because guiding is a separate job.

How a touring day works

Your driver meets you at the airport with a name board, loads the luggage and drives the day's leg with a stop or two. At each site they park, buy the tickets that are in your price, point you to the entrance and wait; at national parks they hand you to the jeep driver and tracker. In the evening they drop you at the hotel and stay in the driver's quarters that most tourist hotels provide. For changes, message our team on WhatsApp, 07:00 to 21:00 Sri Lanka time. Some of our tours include a spice garden stop at Matale, which is free to visit but comes with a sales pitch, and our Luxury tour offers a gem appointment in Galle as an evening choice. If you do not want a stop, say no; nothing in your price depends on it.

Self-drive is legal only with an International Driving Permit plus a recognition permit from the Automobile Association of Ceylon in Colombo or a temporary licence from the Department of Motor Traffic. The UK and Canadian advisories both describe driving as erratic and buses as unsafe, which is why we suggest hiring a driver.

Tips, and the questions to ask

Tips are customary and never required. Published ranges for a driver on a multi-day tour run from USD 5 to 20 a day per vehicle, usually given at the end; there is no official figure. Before you book any driver, ask: what distance is included and what the extra kilometre costs; whether tolls, parking and the driver's lodging are in the price; the vehicle model and year; what happens if the driver falls ill or the vehicle breaks down, and whether a replacement is part of the price; and how and when you pay. With us the answer to the last one is: nothing online, no deposit, cash to your driver when the trip starts. Facts last checked 7 November 2026.
