Classic Sri Lanka, 7 days

Sigiriya, Kandy, the hill train and two Yala safaris

Classic Sri Lanka, 7 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $866 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jan to Apr, it costs $850 to $977 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), in that order. The longest drive is on day 7, from Yala to the airport, about 4 h 15 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

A first-trip loop: Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, the tea country, the train to Ella and two safaris in Yala, back to the airport by expressway. Six nights, one hotel region a day, with no transfer over about 4 hours 15 minutes. It is a full week with early starts on three days and a long drive on the last. The south coast is not included; the 8-day version adds a beach night at Mirissa.

  • Sigiriya Rock at opening time and Pidurangala at sunset
  • Village lunch and a Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari
  • Dambulla caves and the Temple of the Tooth
  • Tea factory on the Ramboda road
  • Nanu Oya to Ella train and the Nine Arch Bridge
  • Afternoon and dawn safaris in Yala Block 1
  1. Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya

Your driver meets you in arrivals and drives about 3 hours 45 minutes to Sigiriya. With a morning arrival there is time to climb Pidurangala Rock, about an hour, for the sunset view of Sigiriya. After a late flight it moves to tomorrow.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 3 h 45 min, 145 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Pidurangala Rock
  2. Day 2: Sigiriya Rock, village lunch, elephant safari

At the rock for the 07:00 counter opening: the climb is about 1,200 steps and 2 to 3 hours, and it is hot and crowded after 09:00. Late morning a village tour by bullock cart and catamaran with a home-cooked lunch. At 15:00 a private jeep for Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, chosen on the day; the big herds gather from July to October. Polonnaruwa can replace the village tour, but with the safari that makes a 12-hour day.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Sigiriya Rock Fortress
    Optional extras, not included:
Polonnaruwa ancient city by bicycle ($13 per person for two), Hot-air balloon flight over Dambulla and Sigiriya ($250 per person for two)
  3. Day 3: Dambulla caves and on to Kandy

Dambulla's painted caves (about 90 minutes), then 2 hours 45 minutes of driving to Kandy with a spice garden stop at Matale. Kandy's lake walk in the late afternoon, the dance show at 17:00 and the 18:30 puja at the Temple of the Tooth, which is crowded and noisy with drums.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Kandy, about 2 h 45 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Activities, included:
    Kandyan dance show
  4. Day 4: Peradeniya and the Ramboda Pass to Nuwara Eliya

Two hours in the Peradeniya botanical gardens, then the A5 over the Ramboda Pass, 2 hours 45 minutes of hairpins with a stop at a tea factory for the tour and tasting. Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 m; nights are about 10 °C and the town itself is scruffy. A walk round Gregory Lake before dinner.

    Road:
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, about 2 h 45 min, 76 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
    Sights, tickets included:
    Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya
    Activities, included:
    Tea factory tour and tasting
    Optional extras, not included:
Golf at Nuwara Eliya Golf Club ($80 per person for two)
  5. Day 5: Train to Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge

A free morning, or Horton Plains at dawn as an extra. The 12:30 to 13:00 train from Nanu Oya to Ella takes about 2 hours 30 minutes through the tea and tunnels; your driver carries the luggage and meets you at Ella. Trains run late and are crowded, and a window seat is not promised. The Nine Arch Bridge in the late afternoon, when a train is due.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Ella, about 2 h, 54 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
    Sights, tickets included:
    Nine Arch Bridge
    Optional extras, not included:
Horton Plains and World's End walk ($36 per person for two)
  6. Day 6: Little Adam's Peak, then Yala

Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, an easy hour, before the main street wakes up. Drive 2 hours 15 minutes to Tissamaharama. At 14:30 a private jeep for Yala Block 1: leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and jeeps bunch up at sightings.

    Road:
Ella to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 2 h 15 min, 88 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Little Adam's Peak
  7. Day 7: Dawn safari and the expressway home

A 05:30 start for a second Yala drive, about 3 hours, then about 4 hours 15 minutes by the Southern Expressway to the airport. This suits flights from about 16:00. If you prefer a night by the sea first, take the 8-day version.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 4 h 15 min, 278 km

Good to know

Pace

Early starts on days 2, 6 and 7; the last day is about 4 hours 15 minutes of driving after a dawn safari.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April.
  • Harder months: September to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.

  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

Is this too fast?

It is a full week with a new hotel most nights. If you want two nights in a row somewhere, the 10-day grand tour slows the same loop down.

What about Yala's closure?

Yala's main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (14 September to 15 October in 2026). On those dates we tell you before the trip, offer Block 5, Udawalawe or Bundala instead, and show any price difference. You decide.

Can we take the train from Kandy?

Not at the moment. The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, so the train runs from Nanu Oya to Ella only.

Do we need a guide as well as the driver?

Your English-speaking driver drives and handles tickets and logistics. A site guide at Sigiriya or the Temple of the Tooth can be hired on the day, for a fee paid to the guide.
