Classic Sri Lanka and beach, 8 days

The classic loop with a night on the south coast

Classic Sri Lanka and beach, 8 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $1,010 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jan to Apr, it costs $929 to $1,142 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), Mirissa (with Weligama), in that order. The longest drive is on day 1, from the airport to Sigiriya, about 3 h 45 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

The 7-day classic loop plus a night at Mirissa: after the dawn safari in Yala you drive 2 hours 15 minutes to the coast for an afternoon on the beach, a dawn whale-watching boat the next morning and Galle Fort on the way to the airport. The beach night at the end breaks up what would otherwise be a long last drive. Whale boats run from November to April; from May to October the south coast sea is rough and the boats stop, so the price leaves the boat out. For a calm sea from May to August, the East coast summer tour is the choice; it is sold in those months only. One beach night is short; a second eases the last day.

Good to know

Pace

Early starts on days 2, 6, 7 and 8; no drive over about 3 hours 45 minutes.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April.
  • Harder months: May to October. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Mirissa (with Weligama)

  • Rough sea and strong currents from May to October, and no whale trips to speak of then.
  • Whale trips can be rough (seasickness is common) and whales are not guaranteed.
  • Loud beach parties several nights a week in season, and the main road runs right behind the beach.
  • Weligama bay is a working fishing harbour, not the prettiest beach.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa: Check-in 06:00. Rough sea possible; not advised in pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa: Children under 5 travel free; whether a small child copes with four hours at sea is for you to judge.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa: Daily from November to late April or early May, with a 10-passenger minimum. No trips May to July. August to October only when the sea allows, so we do not sell those months.

Questions about this tour

Is one beach night enough?

It is short. A second night at Mirissa or Tangalle makes the last day easier. Use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices it before you book.

We travel in July. Does the beach still work?

The south coast sea is rough from May to October, and we do not sell the whale boats then, so the price leaves the boat out and keeps the Mirissa night. For a calm beach from May to August, see the East coast summer tour, sold in those months only. Or move the beach night to Trincomalee: use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

How early is the whale boat?

Pickup at about 05:30 for a 06:00 check-in and a 06:30 departure. The trip is 4 to 5 hours and can be rough; take seasickness tablets an hour before departure if you are prone to it.
