Sri Lanka whale watching: Mirissa vs Trincomalee
The short answer
Mirissa, on the south coast, runs daily whale-watching boats from November to late April; USD 60 per adult with the government fee, breakfast and pickup included. Trincomalee, on the east coast, has shorter trips in roughly May to August for USD 60, wildlife fee included. Blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are seen on some trips, not all. Swimming with whales is illegal and Majeste does not sell it.

Where and when
The continental shelf is narrow off Sri Lanka's south and east coasts, so deep water and the whales that feed in it are close to shore. Blue whales, the largest animal that has lived, pass along the south coast in the north-east monsoon months and are off the east coast in the south-west monsoon months. The two seasons barely overlap, so your dates decide the port.
| Topic | Mirissa (south coast) | Trincomalee (east coast) |
|---|---|---|
| Season | November to late April or early May, daily; no trips May to July; August to October only when the sea allows, which we do not sell | Sources disagree: windows anywhere from March to October appear; May to August is common to all |
| Departure | 06:00 check-in, 06:30 departure; 4 to 5 hours, sometimes longer | Early morning; 2 to 3 hours because the deep water is closer |
| Species | Blue whales, sperm whales, spinner dolphins | Blue and sperm whales, spinner dolphins |
| Our price | USD 60 per adult (12 and over), USD 30 ages 5 to 11, under 5 free; government fee, pickup within 6 km, light breakfast and life jacket included. As a day tour, USD 120 for two with no car charge, because the operator collects you | USD 40 per adult for the boat from one price list, published in December 2025 and titled for 2026, plus USD 20 per person we budget for the government wildlife fee, so nothing is left to pay on the day; a child at the adult rate because the list gives no ages. Not sold from November to February. As a day tour with a half-day car, USD 165 for two |

Mirissa in detail
Boats leave Mirissa harbour at 06:30 and head south into open ocean. A typical trip is 4 to 5 hours and the operator we price with, Raja and the Whales, charges LKR 20,000 (about USD 60) with every government fee, hotel pickup within 6 km, breakfast, water and photographs included; trips need at least 10 passengers. Marketplace listings for shared boats run USD 31 to 90, often before a wildlife fee of USD 18 to 20 per adult that is collected on the day, so compare the full price. Private speedboats and catamarans are listed at USD 175 to 550.
The peak for sightings is January to March. Expect swell: seasickness is common, so take tablets an hour before departure and eat lightly. Not advised in pregnancy or with back problems. Mirissa pairs with Galle (about 1 hour) and the south-coast beaches and is 178 km, about 2h45, from the airport by expressway.
Trincomalee in detail
Boats leave Nilaveli or Trincomalee early and are back by mid-morning. The deep water is closer, so trips are shorter and cheaper, but the boats are small and open and the sea can still be rough. No operator's sighting log was available to us, which is why we publish a rough season rather than a sighting rate. Trincomalee is also where most illegal whale-swim offers are made: a 2024 study by The Pearl Protectors, reported by Daily FT, found 83% of operators surveyed there involved. We do not sell it. Trincomalee is 233 km and about 6 hours by road from the airport, or 2h15 from Sigiriya, and does not combine with Mirissa in one trip.
Kalpitiya dolphins
A third option, on the north-west coast, is dolphin watching from Kalpitiya: large pods of spinner dolphins, with occasional whales further out, from outboard dinghies launched from the beach. The operator we price with runs from September to April (November to April is calmest) at USD 94 per person including tickets, a snack and tax. It pairs with Wilpattu and the kitesurfing lagoon rather than with the south.
The rules boats must follow
These come from Sri Lanka's 2026 whale-watching criteria.
- Life jackets worn by every passenger and crew member for the whole trip.
- No swimming, snorkelling or diving with whales, dolphins or any other species. A Department of Wildlife Conservation official told the Sunday Times in May 2024 that it is prohibited by law. Listings still sell it at USD 260 to 349; do not buy them.
- No head-on approach; boats slow to 5 knots in the approach zone and do not chase or encircle animals.
- Drones not below 500 m within 500 m of a whale.
- A safety briefing before departure and a vessel within its certified capacity.
- A whale can be further away, or missed, because the boat follows these rules. We think that is the right choice.
What we cannot promise
A sighting. Whales are seen on some trips, not all, and sea conditions can cancel a departure at short notice. Return times, which depend on where the animals are. A calm sea: the south coast in April and the east coast at the edges of its season are the roughest. Children under 5 travel free on the Mirissa boat, but whether a small child copes with four hours at sea is for you to judge. Prices and seasons last checked 7 November 2026.
