Galle (with Unawatuna)

Galle Fort is free to enter (reported by MySLTravel entrance fee list 2025-2026, read 7 Nov 2026). Plan 1 to 2 nights here, and the good months are Dec to Apr. Galle is 153 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 2 h 15 min by road, and is known for the ramparts of Galle Fort, the lighthouse and Unawatuna beach.

At a glance

Galle Fort is a 17th-century Dutch walled town (UNESCO) of ramparts, churches, boutiques and cafes. Unawatuna's sheltered bay is 12 to 20 minutes away for a beach. The fort is expensive by Sri Lankan standards, hot at midday and crowded at weekends; the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain from May to September.

Month by month

  • A real drawback: heavy rain, rough sea or a park closure
  • Blank: neither

Months with a real drawback: May, Oct to Nov.

Who it suits

  • Couples

  • Families using Unawatuna as the beach

The downsides

  • Heavy rain in May (about 315 mm) and again in October and November; Unawatuna's sea is rough from May to October.
  • The fort is expensive by Sri Lankan standards and hot and humid at midday.
  • No real beach inside the fort; Unawatuna's beach has narrowed with erosion and gets crowded.
  • Crowded at weekends.

Galle Fort

A walled Dutch town of the 17th century on a promontory, now a UNESCO site, with ramparts you can walk right round, a lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, the old Dutch hospital and streets of boutiques, cafes and small hotels. It is hot and humid at midday and crowded on weekends and when a cruise ship is in. Prices inside the fort are high by Sri Lankan standards.

Free entry

Free to enter and walk. Museums inside charge separately.

Hours: Open access; shops and cafes mostly 9.00 am to 9.00 pm.

  • Walk the ramparts at sunset, from the lighthouse round to Flag Rock.
  • Midday is for the shaded streets and cafes, not the walls.
  • There is no beach in the fort; Unawatuna is 12 to 20 minutes away.
MuseumAbout 1 h on site

Maritime Archaeology Museum, Galle Fort

A museum in an old Dutch warehouse by the Old Gate, run by the Central Cultural Fund, about the ships, trade and shipwrecks of the Galle coast. There are finds from wrecks in the harbour, maps and models. It is a modest museum and an hour is enough; it is a good place to be when the fort is at its hottest.

$12 for two adults

USD 6 per adult, USD 3 for children 6 to 12 and SAARC passport holders. The Central Cultural Fund lists this ticket only as 'Galle (Museum)'; we take it to be this museum.

Hours: CCF counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  • Worth an hour in the heat of the day.
  • Not the same as the Galle National Museum, which is run by a different department.

    Stilt fishermen photo stop, Koggala

Choose your dates and the booker shows the price for them; if a rate changes while you are booking, nothing is booked and you see the new price first. Once you book, your booking keeps its price. Hotels inside Galle Fort behave like luxury whatever their size: they sell out from 20 December to 10 January and for the Galle Literary Festival (17 to 21 March 2027). Galle Fort Hotel and Fort Bazaar sit at USD 250 to 500 a night; Amangalla costs three to four times the luxury rate with a three-night minimum, and our prices do not cover it.
