Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary
A shallow reef just off the main beach at Hikkaduwa where green turtles are seen close to shore on some days, not all, and small fish live among what is left of the coral. The coral is badly degraded; the turtles are the reason to go. Snorkelling from the beach is easy in the calm months.
No fee budgeted
No entrance fee is reported for viewing the reef from the beach. The area is a marine national park on paper, so a small fee could apply; we confirm locally. Glass-bottom boats and snorkel hire are negotiated with the boat owners.
Hours: Open access from the beach; boats run in calm sea, roughly November to April.
- Do not touch or feed the turtles, and do not stand on the coral.
- Glass-bottom boat prices are not regulated; agree the price before you get in.
- The sea is rough and murky from May to October.
