Family Sri Lanka, 10 days

Pool hotels, bicycles, elephants and a shallow sea

Family Sri Lanka, 10 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $1,053 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. For 2 adults and 2 children aged 6 and 9, in comfort hotels at shoulder-season rates, it costs $3,080 in total, $770 per person. In its best months, Jan to Apr, it costs $1,026 to $1,218 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Udawalawe National Park, Hikkaduwa, in that order. The longest drive is on day 1, from the airport to Sigiriya, about 3 h 45 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

The classic loop paced for children: three nights at one pool hotel near Sigiriya, a flat bicycle ride round Polonnaruwa, two elephant safaris, the train, and two nights at Hikkaduwa where green turtles feed close to the beach. Pidurangala replaces the Sigiriya climb by default, because it is shorter and cheaper; the rock can be added for children from about 8 with a head for heights. Jeep safaris have no minimum age, though the tracks are bumpy. There are no elephant rides or bathing anywhere on this tour. The price shown is for two adults; add your children's ages for a family quote.

  • Peradeniya's giant bamboo and a Kandyan dance show
  • Boats and bikes on Gregory Lake, then the train to Ella
  • Udawalawe safari and the Elephant Transit Home feeding

Two adults share each room, and an odd adult has a single room at 80% of the double rate. The family row follows the children's hotel rule: Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed. Children 6 to 11 sharing a room pay a small supplement. From 12, hotels count a child as an adult. We pick the smallest vehicle that seats the group in comfort. Per-person figures are rounded up to the dollar.

Good to know

Pace

Three nights in one hotel at the start, two at the end; the longest drive is about 3 hours 45 minutes on day 1 and 3 hours 20 minutes on day 8.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April.
  • Harder months: May to October. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Udawalawe National Park

  • October and November are the wetter months here; the park stays open.
  • Leopards are present but almost never seen.
  • Flat scrub scenery and little else to do in the area.
  • A good substitute when Yala's main blocks close in September and October.

Hikkaduwa

  • Rough sea from May to October.
  • The coral is badly degraded and the beach has eroded in places.
  • The coast road runs through the town strip: noise and traffic.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Polonnaruwa ancient city by bicycle: About 10 km of flat cycling on paved and sandy tracks.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Hikkaduwa reef snorkelling: You must be able to swim.
  • Hikkaduwa reef snorkelling: West-coast season is November to April; the sea is rough in the south-west monsoon.
  • Madu River boat safari: Life jackets are on board; wear them.

Children and residents

  • Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed. Children 6 to 11 sharing a room pay a small supplement. From 12, hotels count a child as an adult.
  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

How is the price worked out for children?

Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed; 6 to 11 pay a small hotel supplement, and children 6 to 12 pay reduced tickets at the heritage sites and parks; from 12 hotels count a child as an adult. Enter the ages in the quote and it shows the family total.

What about July and August?

The south-west coast is rough then, and the price shown keeps the beach nights there. Pasikudah on the east coast is a shallow bay where small children can wade far out; to move the beach nights there and route back via Sigiriya, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

Is Yala better than Udawalawe for children?

Udawalawe is more reliable for elephants and the drives are shorter and less crowded. Yala has leopards but more jeeps and earlier starts; older children may prefer it, and we can swap.

Do you visit an elephant orphanage?

The Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe, where orphaned calves are fed from a platform and released back into the wild. We do not include rides, bathing or any contact with elephants.
