Grand tour of Sri Lanka, 10 days

The classic loop with room to breathe

Grand tour of Sri Lanka, 10 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $1,230 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jan to Apr, it costs $1,203 to $1,403 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), Galle (with Unawatuna), in that order. The longest drive is on day 1, from the airport to Sigiriya, about 3 h 45 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

The same loop as the 7-day classic with three extra nights where they help most: a third night at Sigiriya for Polonnaruwa, a second in Ella, and a last night in Galle so the final drive is only 2 hours 15 minutes. Horton Plains at dawn is included before the train. Nine nights, five of them in pairs, with no drive over about 3 hours 45 minutes. It is the length we would choose for a first visit.

  • Sigiriya Rock, Pidurangala and Dambulla
  • Polonnaruwa by bicycle
  • Village lunch and an elephant safari
  • Temple of the Tooth and Peradeniya
  • Horton Plains at dawn, then the train to Ella
  • Two Yala safaris
  • Galle Fort with a heritage guide
  1. Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya

About 3 hours 45 minutes from the airport to Sigiriya. Pidurangala Rock at sunset if you arrive in time; otherwise it waits for another evening, since you have three here.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 3 h 45 min, 145 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Pidurangala Rock
  2. Day 2: Sigiriya Rock, village lunch, elephant safari

Sigiriya Rock at the 07:00 counter opening, 2 to 3 hours, then a village tour with bullock cart, catamaran and lunch. At 15:00 a private jeep to Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, chosen by where the elephants are that week.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Sigiriya Rock Fortress
    Optional extras, not included:
Hot-air balloon flight over Dambulla and Sigiriya ($250 per person for two)
  3. Day 3: Polonnaruwa by bicycle

Leave at 07:00 for Polonnaruwa, 1 hour 25 minutes each way, and cycle the flat ruins for 3 to 4 hours: the museum, the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle and the Gal Vihara Buddhas. It is hot and exposed and shoes come off at the shrines. The afternoon is free by the pool, or add Ritigala's forest monastery.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Polonnaruwa Ancient City
    Optional extras, not included:
Slender loris night walk, Sigiriya ($22 per person for two)
  4. Day 4: Dambulla caves and Kandy

Dambulla's painted caves, then 2 hours 45 minutes of driving to Kandy with a spice garden stop. The dance show at 17:00 and the Temple of the Tooth puja at 18:30, crowded and loud with drums.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Kandy, about 2 h 45 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Activities, included:
    Kandyan dance show
  5. Day 5: Peradeniya and the Ramboda Pass

Two hours in the Peradeniya gardens, then 2 hours 45 minutes of hairpins to Nuwara Eliya with a tea factory tour and tasting. An early night: tomorrow starts at 05:00 and it will be cold.

    Road:
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, about 2 h 45 min, 76 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
    Sights, tickets included:
    Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya
    Activities, included:
    Tea factory tour and tasting
  6. Day 6: Horton Plains at dawn, train to Ella

A 05:00 start for the 9 km Horton Plains loop to World's End; cloud usually closes in by 09:00, and outside January to April the view is often hidden. Then the 12:30 to 13:00 train from Nanu Oya to Ella, about 2 hours 30 minutes, with the luggage going by car. Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Ella, about 2 h, 54 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
  7. Day 7: Ella walks and a free afternoon

Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, the Nine Arch Bridge before 09:00 when it is still quiet, and Ravana Falls by the road. The afternoon is free: a zip-line, a cooking class, or nothing. Ella's main street is crowded and commercial; the hotel will be up a lane with steps.

    Overnight:
    Ella
    Optional extras, not included:
Flying Ravana zipline, Ella ($30 per person for two), Sri Lankan cooking class in Ella ($30 per person for two)
  8. Day 8: Down to Yala

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Tissamaharama. A 14:30 private jeep safari in Yala Block 1: leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and the park is dusty and busy at sightings. Kataragama's evening puja is 25 minutes away if you have the energy.

    Road:
Ella to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 2 h 15 min, 88 km
    Optional extras, not included:
Naturalist guide for your safari ($13 per person for two)
  9. Day 9: Dawn safari, then Galle

A 05:30 Yala drive of about 3 hours, then 2 hours 45 minutes by expressway to Galle. In the late afternoon a heritage interpreter walks you round the fort, ending on the ramparts at sunset.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Galle (with Unawatuna), about 2 h 45 min, 143 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Galle Fort
  10. Day 10: Galle morning and the airport

A free morning in the fort or at Unawatuna beach, 15 minutes away. The airport is about 2 hours 15 minutes by expressway, so a mid-afternoon flight works.

    Road:
Galle (with Unawatuna) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 2 h 15 min, 153 km
    Optional extras, not included:
Whale watching from Mirissa ($60 per person for two), Sri Lankan cooking class in Galle Fort ($38 per person for two)

Good to know

Pace

No drive over about 3 hours 45 minutes; early starts on days 2, 3, 6, 7 and 9.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April.
  • Harder months: September to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Galle (with Unawatuna)

  • Heavy rain in May (about 315 mm) and again in October and November; Unawatuna's sea is rough from May to October.
  • The fort is expensive by Sri Lankan standards and hot and humid at midday.
  • No real beach inside the fort; Unawatuna's beach has narrowed with erosion and gets crowded.
  • Crowded at weekends.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Polonnaruwa ancient city by bicycle: About 10 km of flat cycling on paved and sandy tracks.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: About 9 km on uneven ground at 2,100 m; allow three hours of walking.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: Plastic, lighters and cigarettes are checked at the gate.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: January to April is usually the clearest. Mist can hide World's End in any month, and the walk still runs in rain.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Questions about this tour

Why Galle on the last night instead of a beach?

Galle is 2 hours 15 minutes from the airport and has Unawatuna's beach next door, so you get a short last drive and a swim. Mirissa or Tangalle can replace it for a longer beach stay.

Can we add whale watching?

Yes, from November to April: a 06:00 boat from Mirissa on day 10, which then needs an evening flight. Outside those months the boats mostly stop.

Is Horton Plains worth the 05:00 start?

From January to April, usually yes: the view from World's End is clear early and gone by 09:00. From May to December the plain is often in cloud; we tell you and you can swap it for a lie-in.

What if Yala is closed?

The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October. If part of your plan cannot go ahead, we offer another date or a substitute and show any price difference. You decide whether to take it. For the safari that is Yala's Block 5, Udawalawe or Bundala.
