Planning
How many days in Sri Lanka? 7, 10 or 14, priced
The short answer
Seven days covers Sigiriya, Kandy, the hills and one wildlife park, but no beach; ten adds Polonnaruwa, Horton Plains and slower days; fourteen covers the whole island with two parks and the south coast. With Majeste, for two adults in comfort hotels in shoulder season, that is about USD 828, USD 1,174 and USD 1,709 per person, as of 7 November 2026.

The answer by trip length
Per person for two adults sharing a double room in comfort (3-star) hotels, shoulder season, with the car and English-speaking driver, breakfast, every ticket and listed activity, and our 8% Trip planning and support fee on vehicle and hotels. From our trip builder on 7 November 2026; each length has its own day-by-day guide.
| Days | What fits | Longest day in the car | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, the Nanu Oya to Ella train and Yala; no beach | Yala to the airport, 278 km, about 4h15 | USD 828 |
| 10 | Adds Polonnaruwa by bicycle, a village day, Horton Plains and a second night in Kandy and in Ella | Yala to the airport via Galle, about 5 hours | USD 1,174 |
| 14 | Adds Wilpattu, Anuradhapura, a tea bungalow near Hatton, Udawalawe and a night in Galle | No day over 4h30 | USD 1,709 |
Seven days
Enough for the centre and the hills and one wildlife park; not enough if you also want beach days. The loop is about 970 km, with three early starts (the rock, the safari and the morning drive) and one long final day of about 4h15 after a dawn safari, so book an evening flight. A one-night beach stop at the end of a 7-day loop is not worth the drive; an 8- or 9-day version with two beach nights is the better plan.
On the loop in our 7-day guide, two adults pay USD 723 per person in simple hotels, USD 828 in comfort, USD 1,006 in superior and USD 1,314 in luxury hotels. Our Classic Sri Lanka 7-day tour page follows the same loop and adds a village tour and Pidurangala Rock, which is why it is USD 866 per person in comfort hotels.
Ten days
Ten days lets you see the Cultural Triangle properly, spend two nights in Kandy and two in Ella, walk Horton Plains and still fit a Yala safari, without a 12-hour day. The loop is about 1,080 km. Its weak point is the last day: a dawn safari, then about 5 hours of driving with a Galle stop, which only works with a flight after about 21:00. An 11-day version with a Galle or Mirissa night fixes it.
On the loop in our 10-day guide: USD 1,017 per person in simple hotels, USD 1,174 in comfort, USD 1,436 in superior and USD 1,884 in luxury. Our Grand Tour of Sri Lanka 10-day page is a different shape, with one Kandy night and a Galle night with a fort walk, at USD 1,230 per person in comfort hotels.
Fourteen days
Fourteen days covers the north-central parks and ancient cities, the hills, two wildlife parks and the south coast, with no day over 4h30 of driving. The south loop is about 1,440 km and suits January to April and December. From June to September, when the south coast is rough, the second week goes to Arugam Bay, Pasikudah and Trincomalee instead. The cost of the pace is eleven hotels in thirteen nights; dropping Hatton and Udawalawe gives those nights to Ella and Galle.
On the loop in our 14-day guide: USD 1,475 per person in simple hotels, USD 1,709 in comfort, USD 2,101 in superior and USD 2,884 in luxury. Our Complete Island 14-day tour page adds a few stops and is USD 1,716 per person in comfort hotels.
How to choose
Six points that decide the length more than the map does.
- Under a week: pick one region rather than the loop. Our 3-day Cultural Triangle and south coast short breaks are USD 348 and USD 338 per person in comfort hotels.
- For a beach, add two nights rather than one. On our 9-day route each extra beach night adds about USD 167 for two in comfort hotels: the room, a day of the car and our fee.
- Count drive times, not distances. Map apps run far too fast in the hills: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is 76 km and about 2h45 by car.
- The season decides where extra days go. From December to April the beach end is the south or west coast; from May to September it is the east coast.
- A solo traveller pays about two-thirds more per person: on the 7-day comfort loop, USD 1,386 alone against USD 828 each for a couple.
- For reference, visitors stayed 8.29 nights on average in 2025 (Sri Lanka tourism annual review), and German, Dutch, Swiss and French visitors 11 to 14.5 nights (2024 figures).
When the dates move the price
Only the hotel block, and our 8% fee on it, moves with the season. With a 1 February start the same loops cost USD 896, USD 1,276 and USD 1,850 per person in comfort hotels, against USD 828, USD 1,174 and USD 1,709 in shoulder season. Four people in a van pay less per head than two in a car, because the vehicle is shared. The figures leave out flights, the ETA, insurance, lunches and dinners, drinks and tips; once your dates include 24 or 31 December, an estimated gala dinner line appears. Prices and drive times last checked 7 November 2026.
