Sri Lanka 7-day itinerary: classic loop, priced

The short answer

Seven days is enough for Sigiriya, Kandy, the tea country, the Nanu Oya to Ella train and a Yala safari, but not for a beach. The loop is about 970 km with one long final drive. For two adults in comfort hotels it costs USD 866 per person on Majeste's Classic tour in shoulder season, or about USD 828 without its village tour and Pidurangala, as of 7 November 2026.

Is seven days enough?

Yes, for the centre and the hills and one wildlife park. No, if you also want beach days: a one-night beach stop at the end of a 7-day loop is not worth the drive, and an 8- or 9-day version with two beach nights is a better plan. The plan below assumes a morning or midday arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport; if you land after about 15:00, add a night at Negombo and start the next day.

Drive times are our planning times for a private car in daylight with one comfort stop, not map-app estimates, which run far too fast in the hills.

Day by day

Night stops: Sigiriya (2), Kandy (1), Nuwara Eliya (1), Ella (1), Yala area (1).

The honest notes

Everything that can go wrong with this plan, in one place.

  • Day 2 with Polonnaruwa and the safari is a 12-hour day. Choose one of Polonnaruwa or the village tour.
  • Day 7 is the long one: about 4h15 by expressway after a dawn safari. Book an evening flight, or add a Galle night.
  • Sigiriya has 1,200 steps, with the upper stairways exposed to the drop. Queues build from 09:00 to 11:00 and the rock is very hot after 10:00.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, so the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya leg is by road and the train runs from Nanu Oya. Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.
  • Leopards are seen on some Yala drives, not all. Yala's main blocks closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 and the dates change each year. If part of your plan cannot go ahead, we offer another date or a substitute and show any price difference. You decide whether to take it. In a closure that is Udawalawe or Block 5.
  • Elephant numbers at Minneriya are highest from July to October; from November to May the herds are small.
  • Three early starts: the rock, the safari and the morning drive. Pack for 10 °C nights in Nuwara Eliya and 32 °C days in the lowlands.

What it costs

Two adults sharing a double room, bed and breakfast, private car and driver, all tickets, the elephant safari, dance show, tea factory, train seat and two Yala drives, plus our 8% Trip planning and support fee on vehicle and hotels. Shoulder-season figures from our trip builder on 7 November 2026. Our Classic Sri Lanka 7-day tour page follows the same loop and adds the Hiriwadunna village tour and Pidurangala Rock, which is why it is priced higher (USD 866 per person in comfort hotels).

Variations

Families: swap Yala for Udawalawe, where elephants are seen all year and jeep traffic is lighter, and skip the Sigiriya climb for Pidurangala (LKR 1,000, a shorter scramble with a view of the rock). Kitulgala rafting fits on a Kandy-free variant between the airport and the hills. Whale watching from Mirissa needs an eighth day and runs from November to April. In June to September, give the last night to Trincomalee instead of Yala if a calm beach matters more than leopards; that adds driving.

Good months for this loop: January to April. In September and October check the Yala closure first. Prices and times last checked 7 November 2026.

7 days and 6 nights for two adults, from the airport and back: Sigiriya (2 nights), Kandy (1 night), Nuwara Eliya (1 night), Ella (1 night), Yala (1 night). Comfort hotels, bed and breakfast, no date set, so shoulder-season rates: $828 per person, $1,655 for two. That covers the car and English-speaking driver, the hotels, and the tickets and activities on the plan.
