Kandy to Ella train: is it running?

The short answer

No. At Majeste's last check on 4 November 2026, from secondary sources, the Kandy to Ella train was not running end to end. No train reached Kandy station, and Gampola to Nanu Oya was closed after cyclone damage and an October 2026 landslide. The scenic section from Nanu Oya to Ella reopened on 20 June 2026. Majeste drives guests to Nanu Oya and books that train.

Latest change

26 October 2026: a Department of Railways notice extended the Rambukkana to Peradeniya suspension over the whole Gampola to Nanu Oya section. No change to the status was reported after that when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026.

Checked against secondary status pages on 4 November 2026 and news reports of the Department of Railways' notices; the railway's own site could not be read. Re-check railway.gov.lk before you travel; this changes weekly.

What happened

Cyclone Ditwah in late November 2025 damaged the Main Line in dozens of places between Rambukkana and Badulla. Badulla to Nanu Oya reopened on 20 June 2026. Colombo to Peradeniya and Gampola reopened on 2 October 2026, then a train derailed in fallen earth on 5 October, and after another landslide near Kadigamuwa on 24 October the Department of Railways suspended Rambukkana to Peradeniya from 25 October with full refunds for reserved tickets. A notice on 26 October extended the suspension over the whole Gampola to Nanu Oya stretch. The Peradeniya bridge rebuild means nothing reaches Kandy station from either side. The October suspensions rest on one status page and one news report; the June reopening and the earlier closures are well documented.

What we sell instead

The part people want is the part that runs. From Nuwara Eliya your driver takes you the few kilometres to Nanu Oya station for the train at about 12:30 to 13:00, and meets you at Ella with the luggage about 2h30 later: tea estates, tunnels and Haputale's ridge. We confirm the time when we book. Before the closure the full Kandy to Ella ride took about 6h15 (Kandy 08:25 to Ella 14:41 in the normal timetable), most of it in the slower lower section, so the shorter leg is no great loss. Even shorter options: Haputale to Ella (about 1 hour) or Ella to Demodara for the loop and the bridge.

Our price is USD 15 per person including the ticket and our booking service. The face value of this leg is below USD 9 (the whole Colombo to Ella reserved fare is LKR 1,500 to 3,000), so the rest is our booking charge. The seat is its own line on your receipt, and the Trip planning and support line says it includes that charge. Online agents sell the same seats at USD 18 to 24.

Fares and classes

Sri Lanka Railways reserved-seat tariff in force since 1 August 2022, per person one way, as reproduced by induwara.lk and Seat 61 (both checked 7 November 2026). Many 2026 blogs still quote pre-2022 fares; ignore them.

Classes, booking and what cannot be promised

First class is an air-conditioned carriage or, on some trains, an observation saloon with large rear windows. Second class reserved has fans, opening windows and the doorways where everyone takes photographs; most people prefer it for the views. Third class unreserved is sold on the day and cannot sell out, but you may stand. The Ella Odyssey is a tourist train with longer stops at viewpoints.

Seats are sold at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk; overseas cards are reported to work. Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised. Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred. We book in your name, second or first class, whichever is available, and no side of the carriage is promised either. If no seat is left, we tell you, your driver takes you by road instead, and you do not pay for the seat. The UK advisory adds one safety point: stay inside the carriage; falls from open doorways have killed people.

By road, for comparison

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is 76 km and about 2h45 by car through the Ramboda Pass (map apps say 1h35, which is too fast). Nuwara Eliya to Ella is 54 km and about 2 hours. Kandy to Ella direct is 130 km and about 4h30, which is faster than the train ever was. The road is also the fallback when a landslide stops the train for a morning: on 4 November 2026 a landslide near Bandarawela stopped the train for a morning, cleared the same day. Status last checked 4 November 2026 and fares 7 November 2026.
