Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
A 2,243-metre mountain climbed at night by pilgrims of four faiths to reach the footprint shrine at the top for sunrise. From Nallathanniya the path is about 7 km and 5,000 to 5,500 steps; most people take 3 to 4 hours up and 2 to 3 down, starting at about 2.00 to 2.30 am. The season runs from December to May. Outside it the path is unlit, the stalls are shut and cloud usually hides the sunrise.
No fee budgeted
No entrance ticket is listed by any source. Donations are collected at the temples on the way up. We will confirm with the temple before the season.
Hours: Pilgrim season from the December full moon to the May full moon (expected 23 December 2026 to 19 May 2027). The path is lit and tea shops open only in season.
- The descent is the hard part on the knees. Walking poles help.
- The summit is cold and windy, 5 to 10 degrees. Take a warm layer and a hat.
- On Poya days and weekends from January to April the queue is shoulder to shoulder and you may not reach the top by sunrise. Choose a midweek night.
- Sleep at Nallathanniya or a Hatton estate the night before and leave after breakfast on climb day.
