At a glance

Kitulgala is a rainforest village on the Kelani River between Colombo and the hills, known for grade 2 to 3 white-water rafting, canyoning and lowland birding. Most people stop for about three hours on the way to or from Hatton and Nuwara Eliya. Rain falls almost daily in the monsoon months and leeches are common.

The downsides

  • The good months here, May to December, are about the river: rafting runs all year, and these are the months with good water for it. They are also the rainy months: May and October are the wettest at Ratnapura, the nearest station (about 470 mm each), so expect rain on most days.
  • The rafting stretch was shortened by the Broadlands hydropower project and the flow depends on dam releases.
  • Safety standards vary between operators. Ask to see helmets and life jackets before you get in, and turn back if you are not happy.
  • Leeches after rain.

Rafting and canyoning half day, Kitulgala

Both activities in one morning: rafting first, then a canyoning descent. It is a full and tiring half day. A sensible way to break the Colombo to Kandy or Nuwara Eliya drive if you like being wet.

Kitulgala is usually a rafting stop or a single night between Colombo and the hills. There are few hotels, so the superior and luxury rates are rough figures. Luxury here means two boutique properties; the tea bungalows around Hatton are about an hour and a half away.
