Adventure Sri Lanka, 9 days

Rafting, Adam's Peak, Pekoe Trail, Ella Rock, surf

Adventure Sri Lanka, 9 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $1,088 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jan to Apr, it costs $1,062 to $1,237 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Kitulgala, Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country), Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, Ella, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), Mirissa (with Weligama), in that order. The longest drive is on day 1, from the airport to Kitulgala, about 2 h 45 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

Nine days for people who want to move: rafting and canyoning at Kitulgala, the Adam's Peak night climb in the December to May season, the Horton Plains loop, a guided Pekoe Trail stage into Ella, Ella Rock at dawn and a zip-line, then a Yala safari and surf lessons at Weligama. It is a winter itinerary (January to April) because the peak and the south-coast surf both need those months. Expect sore legs by day 6 and three starts before 05:00. From May the surf moves to Arugam Bay, while the climb stays in season until the May full moon. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.

  • White-water rafting and canyoning on the Kelani
  • Adam's Peak at night for sunrise, in season
  • Horton Plains 9 km loop at dawn
  • A guided Pekoe Trail stage from Haputale towards Ella
  • Ella Rock at dawn and the Flying Ravana zip-line
  • Yala afternoon safari
  • Beginner surf lesson at Weligama
  1. Day 1: Airport to Kitulgala, rafting

About 2 hours 45 minutes to Kitulgala on the Kelani River. At 15:00 about 90 minutes of grade 2 to 3 rafting with helmets, life jackets and a guide; the run was shortened by a hydropower project and the flow depends on dam releases. Rain is likely and leeches follow it.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Kitulgala, about 2 h 45 min, 84 km
    Overnight:
    Kitulgala
  2. Day 2: Canyoning, then Adam's Peak by night

A morning of canyoning and waterfall abseiling, then 1 hour 10 minutes to Hatton and the Nallathanniya road. Rest in the afternoon. At about 02:00 you start the Adam's Peak climb: 5,000 to 5,500 steps, 3 to 4 hours up, in the pilgrimage season, expected 23 December 2026 to 19 May 2027. On Poya days and weekends the queue can stop you reaching the top by sunrise; outside the season the path is unlit. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.

    Road:
Kitulgala to Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country), about 1 h 15 min, 35 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
  3. Day 3: Sunrise on the summit, down to Nuwara Eliya

Sunrise from the summit if the cloud allows, then the descent, which is the painful part for the knees, back by about 09:00. About 1 hour 25 minutes to Nuwara Eliya and a recovery afternoon. Cold tonight and a 05:00 start tomorrow.

    Road:
Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country) to Nuwara Eliya, about 1 h 30 min, 41 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
  4. Day 4: Horton Plains loop, then Haputale

The 9 km Horton Plains loop from first light, about 3 hours, to World's End and Baker's Falls; cloud usually covers the view by 09:00. About 1 hour 40 minutes to Haputale on its ridge and up to Lipton's Seat for sunset, if the cloud has lifted.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Haputale, about 1 h 45 min, 43 km
    Overnight:
    Haputale
    Sights, tickets included:
    Lipton's Seat
  5. Day 5: Pekoe Trail stage to Ella

A guided stage of the Pekoe Trail through the tea estates from Haputale towards Ella, four to seven hours depending on the stage; we confirm the stage and the guide when you book, and check the trail's alert page first. Your driver takes the luggage to Ella, 50 minutes by road.

    Road:
Haputale to Ella, about 45 min, 25 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
    Activities, included:
    Pekoe Trail guided stage
  6. Day 6: Ella Rock at dawn, zip-line

Ella Rock with a guide from first light, about 4 hours return along the railway and up through the tea. In the afternoon the Flying Ravana zip-line above the tea (the ride itself is under a minute), and the Nine Arch Bridge if you have not seen it. Diyaluma's upper pools are an hour away for the energetic.

    Overnight:
    Ella
    Sights, tickets included:
    Ella Rock, Nine Arch Bridge
    Optional extras, not included:
Diyaluma Falls upper pools hike ($55 per person for two)
  7. Day 7: Down to Yala, afternoon safari

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Tissamaharama and a 14:30 private jeep in Yala Block 1. Leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and jeeps crowd sightings.

    Road:
Ella to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 2 h 15 min, 88 km
    Optional extras, not included:
Yala morning safari (private jeep) ($81 per person for two)
  8. Day 8: To Weligama, surf lesson

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Weligama bay, the beginner surf beach, for a 90-minute lesson. Weligama is a working fishing harbour rather than a pretty beach; Mirissa, 15 to 20 minutes away, has the sunset and the bars.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Mirissa (with Weligama), about 2 h 15 min, 118 km
    Activities, included:
    Surf lesson at Weligama
  9. Day 9: Morning surf and the airport

A second session on your own with a hired board, while the wind is still light. Then about 2 hours 45 minutes by expressway to the airport.

    Road:
Mirissa (with Weligama) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 2 h 45 min, 178 km

Good to know

Pace

Hard on the legs: a 02:00 start on day 2, 05:00 on days 4 and 6; no drive over about 2 hours 45 minutes.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April.
  • Harder months: May to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Kitulgala

  • The good months here, May to December, are about the river: rafting runs all year, and these are the months with good water for it. They are also the rainy months: May and October are the wettest at Ratnapura, the nearest station (about 470 mm each), so expect rain on most days.
  • The rafting stretch was shortened by the Broadlands hydropower project and the flow depends on dam releases.
  • Safety standards vary between operators. Ask to see helmets and life jackets before you get in, and turn back if you are not happy.
  • Leeches after rain.

Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country)

  • Outside the December to May season the path is unlit, the tea shops are shut and cloud usually hides the sunrise. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.
  • The climb is hard on the knees and the descent is the painful part. The top is cold and windy, 5 to 10 °C.
  • On Poya days and weekends from January to April the queue is shoulder to shoulder and you may not reach the summit by sunrise; Medin Poya (22 March 2027) is the busiest day.
  • The Hatton railway was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Haputale

  • October and November are the wettest months.
  • Often inside the cloud by late morning; go up to Lipton's Seat early.
  • Few restaurants, little nightlife, and simple accommodation apart from a few estate bungalows.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Mirissa (with Weligama)

  • Rough sea and strong currents from May to October, and no whale trips to speak of then.
  • Whale trips can be rough (seasickness is common) and whales are not guaranteed.
  • Loud beach parties several nights a week in season, and the main road runs right behind the beach.
  • Weligama bay is a working fishing harbour, not the prettiest beach.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • White-water rafting on the Kelani River: The operator has not published a minimum age; ask us before booking for children under 12.
  • White-water rafting on the Kelani River: You must be able to swim with a buoyancy aid and follow the guide's instructions.
  • Canyoning at Kitulgala: Moderate fitness and a head for heights. Ask us before booking for children under 12.
  • Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) sunrise climb with guide: About 5,500 steps up and the same down; four to six hours of walking at night. Good fitness needed.
  • Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) sunrise climb with guide: Pilgrimage season runs from the December full moon to Vesak in May (expected 23 December 2026 to 19 May 2027). Outside it the path is unlit, the stalls are shut and the weather is often wet. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: About 9 km on uneven ground at 2,100 m; allow three hours of walking.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: Plastic, lighters and cigarettes are checked at the gate.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: January to April is usually the clearest. Mist can hide World's End in any month, and the walk still runs in rain.
  • Pekoe Trail guided stage: Four to seven hours of walking on estate roads and footpaths with some climbs.
  • Pekoe Trail guided stage: On 6 November 2026 stage 2 was closed and eight stages were on amber alert for the north-east monsoon. Status changes weekly.
  • Ella Rock guided hike: Steep in places; about 8 km return. Walking on the railway track is part of the route, so stay alert for trains.
  • Ella Rock guided hike: Wettest October to December. Views are often misty in the afternoon in any month.
  • Flying Ravana zipline, Ella: Height 90 to 195 cm, weight 30 to 100 kg.
  • Flying Ravana zipline, Ella: Not for pregnant guests, anyone with a medical condition, or anyone under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medicine.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Surf lesson at Weligama: You must be able to swim.
  • Surf lesson at Weligama: South-coast surf season is roughly November to April. Outside it the sea is rougher and some schools close.

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.

  • Inside 24 hours, tell us at once: your driver has held those days for you and turned other work away.

Children and residents

  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

How fit do we need to be?

Reasonably. Adam's Peak is 5,000 to 5,500 steps overnight, Horton Plains is 9 km, the Pekoe stage is four to seven hours and Ella Rock is 4 hours. Any day can be shortened; tell us and we adjust.

What if we come in summer?

From May the surf moves to Arugam Bay on the east coast, and the price shown keeps the Weligama lesson, with a warning on the receipt. An Arugam Bay ending, with a Kumana safari, needs an extra Ella night for the long last transfer; to build it, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book. The Adam's Peak climb stays in season until the May full moon (expected 23 December 2026 to 19 May 2027). We do not recommend the climb from June to November. If part of your plan cannot go ahead, we offer another date or a substitute and show any price difference. You decide whether to take it.

Is rafting safe?

It is a grade 2 to 3 stretch. Standards vary between operators, so ask to see helmets and life jackets before you get in, and turn back if you are not happy.
