Day by day

A south-coast week built round the surf: four nights at Weligama for three beginner lessons and a dawn whale boat, two at Hiriketiya's horseshoe bay near Tangalle with a yoga day and a turtle night, and one at Hikkaduwa for the reef and the turtles that feed by the beach. Drives are short and on the expressway. It is sold for November to April only, the surf season at Weligama: from May to October the sea is rough and the whale boats stop. Weligama bay is a working harbour and Mirissa's beach has loud parties several nights a week in season.

  • Three surf lessons at Weligama's beginner bay
  • Blue whale boat from Mirissa
  • Coconut Tree Hill at sunrise
  • Hiriketiya's surf bay and a yoga day pass at Talalla
  • Mulkirigala rock temple and the Rekawa turtle watch
  • Hikkaduwa reef snorkel and Galle Fort at sunset
  1. Day 1: Airport to Weligama

About 2 hours 45 minutes by expressway to Weligama. A walk along the bay to check the surf and the boards, and dinner at Mirissa, 15 to 20 minutes away.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Mirissa (with Weligama), about 2 h 45 min, 178 km
  2. Day 2: First surf lesson

A 07:00 lesson of about 90 minutes on Weligama's beginner waves, with the board included. The afternoon is for resting sore arms. Sunset at Mirissa.

    Activities, included:
    Surf lesson at Weligama
  3. Day 3: Second lesson, Coconut Tree Hill

A second morning lesson; those who are already standing can try Midigama or Ahangama, 15 to 20 minutes away, where the waves are for intermediates. Coconut Tree Hill at sunrise or sunset for the photo everyone takes.

    Activities, included:
    Surf lesson at Weligama
    Optional extras, not included:
Paddy and lagoon cycling near Galle ($25 per person for two)
  4. Day 4: Whale boat, third lesson

The whale boat leaves Mirissa at 06:30 and returns around 11:00; seasickness is common and whales are seen on some trips in season, not all. A third lesson in the late afternoon when the wind drops.

  5. Day 5: To Hiriketiya, yoga at Talalla

About 1 hour 10 minutes east to Hiriketiya, the horseshoe bay near Dikwella, with a stop at Talalla for a yoga day pass: a class in the open-air shala, a meal and the pool. Surf the bay in the afternoon; it is crowded in season.

    Road:
Mirissa (with Weligama) to Tangalle (Rekawa and Hiriketiya), about 1 h 15 min, 48 km
  6. Day 6: Dawn surf, Mulkirigala, turtles at night

Surf at first light, then the Hummanaya blowhole and the rock temple of Mulkirigala, a climb of about 500 steps. After dark the community turtle watch at Rekawa, red torches only; turtles come up on some nights, not all, and the fee is paid at the centre.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Mulkirigala Rock Temple
Activities, paid there, not in the price:
Turtle nesting watch at Rekawa beach
  7. Day 7: To Hikkaduwa, reef and Galle Fort

About 2 hours west via Galle to Hikkaduwa. A snorkel over the sanctuary reef, which is degraded but has fish and green turtles that feed close to the beach (watch, do not touch). Galle Fort for sunset, 35 minutes back along the coast.

    Road:
Tangalle (Rekawa and Hiriketiya) to Hikkaduwa, about 2 h, 94 km
    Overnight:
    Hikkaduwa
    Sights, tickets included:
    Galle Fort
    Activities, included:
    Hikkaduwa reef snorkelling
    Optional extras, not included:
Two boat dives at Hikkaduwa (certified divers) ($89 per person for two)
  8. Day 8: Morning surf and the airport

A last session at Main Reef or Benny's for intermediates, or a swim. Then about 2 hours 15 minutes by expressway to the airport.

    Road:
Hikkaduwa to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 2 h 15 min, 141 km

Good to know

Pace

Short drives, four nights in one place; early starts for the surf and a 05:30 start for the whale boat.

When to go

  • Best months: November to April.
  • Harder months: May to October. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Mirissa (with Weligama)

  • Rough sea and strong currents from May to October, and no whale trips to speak of then.
  • Whale trips can be rough (seasickness is common) and whales are not guaranteed.
  • Loud beach parties several nights a week in season, and the main road runs right behind the beach.
  • Weligama bay is a working fishing harbour, not the prettiest beach.

Tangalle (Rekawa and Hiriketiya)

  • Rough sea and strong currents from May to October; several beaches have shore-break at any time and few have lifeguards. Ask before swimming.
  • Spread out; you need transport to get around.
  • Turtles nest year-round, most often around April to July; sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Hiriketiya is crowded in season.

Hikkaduwa

  • Rough sea from May to October.
  • The coral is badly degraded and the beach has eroded in places.
  • The coast road runs through the town strip: noise and traffic.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Surf lesson at Weligama, Hikkaduwa reef snorkelling: You must be able to swim.
  • Surf lesson at Weligama: South-coast surf season is roughly November to April. Outside it the sea is rougher and some schools close.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa: Check-in 06:00. Rough sea possible; not advised in pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa: Children under 5 travel free; whether a small child copes with four hours at sea is for you to judge.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa: Daily from November to late April or early May, with a 10-passenger minimum. No trips May to July. August to October only when the sea allows, so we do not sell those months.
  • Turtle nesting watch at Rekawa beach: Waiting can run past midnight. Bring repellent and patience.
  • Turtle nesting watch at Rekawa beach: Turtles nest all year at Rekawa, with more from about April to July. Full-moon nights are brighter and often quieter.
  • Hikkaduwa reef snorkelling: West-coast season is November to April; the sea is rough in the south-west monsoon.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
  • Inside 24 hours, tell us at once: your driver has held those days for you and turned other work away.
  • Your driver's name and vehicle plate come by 20:00 the evening before the trip, or within 30 minutes of a later booking.

Read the cancellation policy

Children and residents

  • Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed. Children 6 to 11 sharing a room pay a small supplement. From 12, hotels count a child as an adult.
  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

We have never surfed. Is Weligama right?

Yes. The bay has small, slow waves and sandy bottom, and the lessons are for beginners. Intermediates go to Midigama, Ahangama or Hikkaduwa's reef.

What about May to October?

We do not sell this tour then: the south coast is rough, the Weligama lessons stop and so do the whale boats. The surf moves to Arugam Bay on the east coast, and the East coast summer tour, sold from May to August only, has a lesson there. For September or October, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

Can we swap Hikkaduwa for Galle?

Yes. Galle Fort is 20 minutes from Hikkaduwa and has Unawatuna for a swim; the reef and the turtles are the reason to stay at Hikkaduwa.
