Day by day

The summer alternative to the south coast, for May to August when the east is dry and calm: Sigiriya and an elephant safari, Trincomalee for Pigeon Island, Pasikudah's shallow bay, Arugam Bay for surf and a Kumana safari, then down to Yala for two drives before the expressway home. The south-west beaches are excluded on purpose; the sea there is rough in these months. The drives along the east coast are 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes each, through slow towns. Yala's main blocks usually close for part of September and October, on dates that vary, so the tour is sold for May to August only.

  • Sigiriya Rock and a Minneriya or Kaudulla safari in Gathering season
  • Pigeon Island snorkelling, with reef sharks and turtles on some mornings
  • Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock
  • Pasikudah's shallow, calm bay
  • Surf lesson at Arugam Bay and a Kumana safari
  • Two safaris in Yala
  1. Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya

About 3 hours 45 minutes from the airport. Pidurangala Rock at sunset if you arrive in time, otherwise tomorrow evening.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 3 h 45 min, 145 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Pidurangala Rock
  2. Day 2: Sigiriya Rock and the elephant Gathering

Sigiriya Rock at the 07:00 counter opening, 2 to 3 hours. At 15:00 a private jeep to Minneriya or Kaudulla; from July to September this is the Gathering, when herds of a hundred or more are on the lake bed. In May and June the groups are smaller.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Sigiriya Rock Fortress
    Optional extras, not included:
Hiriwadunna village tour with lunch ($35 per person for two)
  3. Day 3: To Nilaveli, Koneswaram at sunset

About 2 hours 15 minutes via Habarana to the beaches at Nilaveli or Uppuveli; elephants cross the A6 at dusk. Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock and the deer of Fort Frederick for sunset.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Trincomalee (Nilaveli and Uppuveli), about 2 h 15 min, 95 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Koneswaram Temple
  4. Day 4: Pigeon Island

A boat to Pigeon Island at 08:00 to snorkel, with blacktip reef sharks and turtles on some mornings, not all; the reef is crowded by 10:00 and the near-shore coral is damaged. The afternoon on the beach, or a whale and dolphin boat (sightings vary) or Marble Beach.

    Activities, included:
    Pigeon Island snorkelling
    Optional extras, not included:
Whale and dolphin watching from Trincomalee ($60 per person for two), Discover Scuba try-dive at Trincomalee ($75 per person for two)
  5. Day 5: Down the coast to Pasikudah

About 2 hours 45 minutes on the A15 coast road through Kinniya, Muttur and Vakarai. Pasikudah is a wide, very shallow bay lined with resort hotels and little else; you can wade far out, though the water near the shore can be murky.

    Road:
Trincomalee (Nilaveli and Uppuveli) to Pasikudah (Kalkudah and Batticaloa), about 2 h 45 min, 105 km
  6. Day 6: Batticaloa, then Arugam Bay

A morning in the shallows, then about 3 hours 15 minutes south via Batticaloa, with a stop at the Dutch fort and the lagoon, and through the slow towns of Kalmunai and Akkaraipattu. Arugam Bay is a surf village of simple guesthouses and cafes; sunset at the point.

    Road:
Pasikudah (Kalkudah and Batticaloa) to Arugam Bay, about 3 h 15 min, 147 km
    Overnight:
    Arugam Bay
  7. Day 7: Kumana safari and a surf lesson

A 06:00 private jeep into Kumana National Park: birds, crocodiles and leopards on some drives, with very few other jeeps. In the afternoon a 90-minute surf lesson at Baby Point; Main Point is for experienced surfers and the line-ups are crowded in July and August.

    Overnight:
    Arugam Bay
  8. Day 8: To Yala, afternoon safari

About 3 hours 15 minutes via Monaragala and Kataragama to Tissamaharama; the road skirts Yala's Block 5 and elephants are on it at dusk. A 14:30 safari in Block 1, where leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and jeeps bunch at sightings.

    Road:
Arugam Bay to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 3 h 15 min, 154 km
  9. Day 9: Dawn safari and the expressway home

A 05:30 Yala drive of about 3 hours, then about 4 hours 15 minutes by the Southern Expressway to the airport. This suits flights from about 16:00.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 4 h 15 min, 278 km

Priced for a start date in each period. Your dates may fall across two seasons, so check them in the price box. East-coast hotels follow their own calendar: their busy months are May to September. Some stops here cost more in their own busy weeks, such as mid-July to August. This tour is sold in these months only.

Good to know

Pace

Three coast drives of 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes (days 5, 6 and 8) and a 4 hour 15 minute final run after the dawn safari.

When to go

  • Best months: May to August.
  • Harder months: September to March. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Trincomalee (Nilaveli and Uppuveli)

  • Wet and rough from November to January (about 340 to 375 mm a month in November and December); many beach hotels close.
  • Pigeon Island's near-shore coral is damaged and the reef is crowded by 10:00.
  • Far from the south coast; Trincomalee and Mirissa do not combine well in one trip.
  • Sources disagree on the whale season; we say roughly May to August, the months all of them share, and do not quote sighting rates.

Pasikudah (Kalkudah and Batticaloa)

  • November to January are very wet (Batticaloa averages 420 to 470 mm in November and December) and the sea is rough.
  • A resort strip with little independent dining or local life.
  • The sea can be murky near the shore.
  • Kandy is 4h30 to 5h away and Colombo 6h30 to 7h30.

Arugam Bay

  • Most businesses shut from November to March; October is wet and the village closes down.
  • Far from everything: 7 to 8 hours from Colombo and 3 to 3h30 from Ella.
  • Crowded line-ups in July and August and party noise near the main strip.
  • Accommodation is mostly simple.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Kumana half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Kumana half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Pigeon Island snorkelling: You must be able to swim. Life jackets are provided on the boat.
  • Pigeon Island snorkelling: Calm from about May to September. Boats do not go out in rough sea, and from November to January the sea is rough with the north-east monsoon, so we do not sell those months.
  • Kumana half-day safari (private jeep): Bird nesting is roughly April to July; the east coast is dry from May to September. Seasons are from general guides.
  • Surf lesson at Arugam Bay: You must be able to swim.
  • Surf lesson at Arugam Bay: East-coast season is roughly May to October. Most surf camps close from November to April.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Questions about this tour

Why end at Yala rather than drive straight back from Arugam Bay?

Arugam Bay to the airport is 7 to 8 hours. Yala breaks it into 3 hours 15 minutes and 4 hours 15 minutes and adds two safaris. Ella is the other option, but it leaves a 6-hour last day.

Can we come in September?

Not as this tour. It is sold for May to August only, because Yala's main blocks usually close for part of September and October (14 September to 15 October in 2026) and the dates vary. For your own plan without Yala, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

Are the east coast hotels open all year?

No. Many close or run a skeleton service from November to March, and Arugam Bay largely shuts from November. That is why this tour is sold for May to August only.
