Costs

How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost in 2026/27?

The short answer

Majeste's Classic Sri Lanka 7-day tour for two adults costs USD 866 per person in 3-star hotels in shoulder season, or about USD 828 without its village tour and Pidurangala, as of 7 November 2026. That covers car, driver, breakfast, tickets, three safaris and our 8% fee. Without those two extras, the same 7 days is USD 723 in guesthouses, USD 1,006 in 4-star and USD 1,314 in 5-star hotels.

What the total is made of

A private tour has five cost blocks: the vehicle with its driver, the hotels, the entrance tickets, the activities such as jeep safaris or the hill train, and our own fee. On our 7-day classic loop for two adults the split is USD 525 for the car and driver, USD 400 for six nights in comfort-tier hotels, USD 127 for tickets, USD 529 for activities and USD 74 for Trip planning and support, a total of USD 1,655 or USD 828 per person. That last line is our fee: 8% of the vehicle and hotels on multi-day trips, for planning, booking every hotel and ticket, and our team on WhatsApp, 07:00 to 21:00 Sri Lanka time, throughout the trip. Sights and activities are at their listed price. The figures below are what the trip builder used on 7 November 2026. They are planning rates, built from public prices rather than contracts, so the quote you see on the site is the one that counts.

Car and driver per day

Our rates per touring day, with fuel, expressway tolls, parking and the driver's meals and lodging included, and 150 km a day pooled across the trip: car (Toyota Prius or Axio class, up to 2 people comfortably) USD 75; van (Toyota KDH, up to 5) USD 99; large van (9 seats) USD 119; mini coach (up to 12) USD 175. Extra distance beyond the pooled allowance is USD 0.45 per km for the car and USD 0.55 for the van. Multi-day trips add our 8% fee, so a car day costs USD 81 in practice. A day tour of up to 6 hours uses a half-day rate, 60% of the day rate (USD 45 for the car), and some day tours have no car charge because the jeep or boat collects you.

For comparison, a directory of 508 drivers' own published rates (updated 6 November 2026) averages USD 65 a day for a standard sedan and USD 90 for a 6-seat van, with about 150 km a day. Rough Guides gives USD 40 to 80 a day. Ceylon Route (May 2026) warns that very cheap quotes of USD 30 to 40 a day usually mean the driver relies on shop commissions. Our rate sits in the upper half of the market with everything included. It is not the lowest you will find.

Hotels per night

Planning rates in USD per double room per night, bed and breakfast, with 10% service charge, SSCL and 18% VAT included. Shoulder is 1 November to 20 December and April; peak is 10 January to 31 March; low is May to October, with 15 July to 31 August at peak in the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and Yala; festive is 21 December to 9 January.

Tickets and safaris

Entrance fees are set by the authorities, and we add no fee of our own to them. The big ones for a foreign adult: Sigiriya USD 35, Polonnaruwa USD 30, Anuradhapura USD 30 (Central Cultural Fund, set in dollars and paid in rupees), Temple of the Tooth LKR 3,000 (about USD 9), Dambulla cave temple LKR 3,000 (no official page; some sites still show 2,000), Peradeniya gardens LKR 3,540. National park tickets are a formula: USD 25 per adult plus USD 10 and LKR 300 per jeep, all plus 18% VAT, which comes to USD 71.86 for two adults sharing a jeep. Add the jeep itself (Yala USD 89, Udawalawe USD 79, Minneriya USD 75) and a private half-day safari for two is USD 146.86 to 160.86, or USD 74 to 81 each. Mirissa whale watching is USD 60 per adult with the government fee included.

On the 7-day loop the tickets come to about USD 64 per person and the activities (an elephant safari, a dance show, a tea factory, the hill train and two Yala drives) to about USD 264 per person.

Food, tips and the rest

Breakfast is in the hotel rate. We can add dinners as half board: USD 12 per adult per night in simple hotels, USD 18 in comfort, USD 28 in superior and USD 45 in luxury. Luxury tea bungalows at Hatton are full board already. A rice-and-curry lunch at a roadside restaurant is a few dollars; lunches are not included, so you can choose where to eat. Restaurants and hotels add a 10% service charge to bills.

Tips are customary and always discretionary. Guidebooks and operators give USD 5 to 20 a day for a driver on a multi-day tour and LKR 1,000 to 2,000 per jeep for a safari crew; there is no official tariff, and a tip is never part of your price. Two other items catch people out. Most resort hotels charge compulsory gala dinners on 24 and 31 December (USD 70 per adult at Weligama Bay Resort; up to USD 243 at a 5-star on one reseller page). When your hotel nights include those dates we add an estimated line of USD 40 per adult in comfort, USD 70 in superior and USD 180 in luxury, half for children 6 to 11, marked as an estimate on your receipt. The other is the visa: free for 40 nationalities since 25 May 2026 and USD 50 for the rest at our last reading of the fees page.

Worked totals for two adults, shoulder season

Per person, sharing a double room, bed and breakfast, all tickets and listed activities included, with our 8% Trip planning and support fee on vehicle and hotels, from our trip builder on 7 November 2026. The 7-day plan here is a lighter version of our Classic Sri Lanka 7-day tour, which adds a village tour and Pidurangala Rock and is priced on its own page (USD 866 per person in comfort hotels, shoulder season).

How the season changes the bill

Only the hotel block, and our 8% fee on it, moves with the season. The 7-day comfort trip above is USD 828 per person in shoulder season, USD 896 with a 1 February start and USD 809 with a 15 June start. At the luxury tier the swing is larger: USD 1,314 shoulder, USD 1,733 in February, USD 1,206 in June. Four people in a van pay less per person than two in a car because the vehicle is shared: the same 7-day comfort loop is about USD 520 per person for a family of two adults and two children aged 4 and 9.

What is not in these numbers

International flights; the ETA (free for 40 nationalities, otherwise USD 50 at our last reading); travel insurance; lunches and dinners unless you add half board; drinks; tips; personal spending. These undated totals also leave out gala dinners: once you set dates that include the nights of 24 or 31 December, the estimate appears as its own line. Marketplace listings often leave out entrance tickets, which come to about USD 64 per person on this 7-day loop before safaris, so compare the full price for the same dates and group.
