Complete island, 14 days

The full loop: four parks, rafting, a tea bungalow

Complete island, 14 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $1,716 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included, and temple-run sites paid there. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Feb to Apr, it costs $1,677 to $1,856 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Negombo, Wilpattu National Park, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country), Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Udawalawe National Park, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), Galle (with Unawatuna), in that order. The longest drive is on day 2, from Negombo to Wilpattu National Park, about 3 h 15 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

Two weeks round the classic loop with everything the shorter versions leave out: Wilpattu and Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa by bicycle, white-water rafting at Kitulgala on the way to a tea-estate night at Hatton, Horton Plains, Lipton's Seat, Udawalawe and Yala, and Galle at the end. Thirteen nights and no drive over about 3 hours 15 minutes. It is the itinerary we would plan for someone with two weeks who wants to see most of the island once. From June to September the south coast is rough; the price shown ends at Galle in every month, and the planner can price an east-coast ending instead.

  • Wilpattu and Anuradhapura in the north-west
  • Sigiriya Rock, Ritigala and Polonnaruwa by bicycle
  • White-water rafting at Kitulgala
  • A night in a tea-estate bungalow at Hatton
  • Horton Plains and the train to Ella
  • Udawalawe, the Elephant Transit Home and two Yala safaris
  • Galle Fort to finish
  1. Day 1: Airport to Negombo

A 25-minute transfer to Negombo and a rest after the flight: beach walk, lagoon sunset, seafood dinner. The beach is average; this is a soft start, not a highlight.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Negombo, about 30 min, 11 km
    Overnight:
    Negombo
  2. Day 2: Wilpattu safari

About 3 hours 15 minutes north to Wilpattu's gate, then a private jeep safari from early afternoon until dusk. Simple, comfort and superior hotels here are in or near Anuradhapura, about an hour from the gate; the one lodge we name at the gate is the luxury choice. The park is forest and natural lakes, with few jeeps; leopards and sloth bears are seen on some drives, not all.

    Road:
Negombo to Wilpattu National Park, about 3 h 15 min, 162 km
    Activities, included:
    Wilpattu safari (private jeep)
  3. Day 3: Anuradhapura and Mihintale

Under an hour to Anuradhapura. The sacred city in the afternoon by car, socks on for the hot stone at the dagobas, then Mihintale's 1,840 steps at sunset.

    Road:
Wilpattu National Park to Anuradhapura, about 60 min, 36 km
    Overnight:
    Anuradhapura
    Sights, tickets included:
    Anuradhapura Sacred City, Mihintale
Paid there, not in the price:
    Anuradhapura Sacred City: temple-run sites
    Optional extras, not included:
Anuradhapura sacred city by bicycle ($23 per person for two)
  4. Day 4: Ritigala and Pidurangala

About 1 hour 40 minutes to Sigiriya via the forest monastery of Ritigala, a quiet hour of ruins on a wooded hill. Pidurangala Rock in the late afternoon for the view of Sigiriya at sunset.

    Road:
Anuradhapura to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 1 h 45 min, 70 km
  5. Day 5: Sigiriya Rock, Polonnaruwa and elephants

A long day with three parts. Two of them make a comfortable day, and we plan that with you. Sigiriya Rock at the 07:00 counter opening (2 to 3 hours); Polonnaruwa by bicycle, 1 hour 25 minutes each way, 3 hours on site; and a 15:00 elephant safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.

  6. Day 6: Dambulla caves and Kandy

Dambulla's painted caves, then 2 hours 45 minutes to Kandy via Matale. The dance show at 17:00 and the Temple of the Tooth puja at 18:30.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Kandy, about 2 h 45 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Activities, included:
    Kandyan dance show
  7. Day 7: Peradeniya, rafting at Kitulgala, tea bungalow at Hatton

Peradeniya gardens in the morning, then 2 hours 15 minutes on hill roads to Kitulgala for about 90 minutes of grade 2 to 3 white-water rafting on the Kelani with helmets and life jackets; the flow depends on dam releases. Another 1 hour 10 minutes to Hatton and a tea-estate bungalow above the reservoir, with a factory tour and tasting. About 3 hours 30 minutes of driving in all.

    Road:
Kandy to Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country), about 2 h 15 min, 68 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya
  8. Day 8: Tea country to Nuwara Eliya

A morning walk through the estate and along Castlereagh reservoir, then 1 hour 25 minutes to Nuwara Eliya. In the pilgrimage season (expected 23 December 2026 to 19 May 2027) fit guests can swap the night for the Adam's Peak climb, starting at about 02:00. Early to bed for Horton Plains.

    Road:
Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country) to Nuwara Eliya, about 1 h 30 min, 41 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
    Optional extras, not included:
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) sunrise climb with guide ($75 per person for two), Pekoe Trail guided stage ($90 per person for two)
  9. Day 9: Horton Plains at dawn, train to Ella

Leave at 05:00 for the 9 km Horton Plains loop; the view from World's End is usually gone by 09:00 and often hidden outside January to April. The 12:30 to 13:00 train from Nanu Oya to Ella, about 2 hours 30 minutes, luggage by car.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Ella, about 2 h, 54 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
  10. Day 10: Ella walks and Lipton's Seat

Little Adam's Peak at sunrise and the Nine Arch Bridge early. Then 50 minutes to Haputale and up to Lipton's Seat for the view over the Dambatenne estate; go before late morning, when cloud fills the valleys.

    Overnight:
    Ella
    Optional extras, not included:
Diyaluma Falls upper pools hike ($55 per person for two)
  11. Day 11: Down to Udawalawe

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Udawalawe and a 15:30 jeep safari of about 3 hours across open scrub around the reservoir. Elephants are usually seen, though sightings are not guaranteed; leopards live here but are almost never seen.

    Road:
Ella to Udawalawe National Park, about 2 h 15 min, 90 km
  12. Day 12: Elephant Transit Home and Yala

Feeding time at the Elephant Transit Home, watched from a platform with no contact. Drive 1 hour 40 minutes to Tissamaharama and a 14:30 Yala Block 1 safari: leopards on some drives, not all, and jeep jams at sightings.

    Road:
Udawalawe National Park to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 1 h 45 min, 68 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home
  13. Day 13: Dawn safari, then Galle

A 05:30 Yala drive of about 3 hours, then 2 hours 45 minutes by expressway to Galle. A guided walk of the fort in the late afternoon, ending on the ramparts at sunset.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Galle (with Unawatuna), about 2 h 45 min, 143 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Galle Fort
  14. Day 14: Galle or Unawatuna, then the airport

A free morning in the fort or on Unawatuna beach, or a 06:30 whale boat from Mirissa between November and April. About 2 hours 15 minutes to the airport.

    Road:
Galle (with Unawatuna) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 2 h 15 min, 153 km
    Optional extras, not included:
Whale watching from Mirissa ($60 per person for two)

Good to know

Pace

No drive over about 3 hours 15 minutes; day 5 is long if you do all three parts; dawn starts on days 5, 9, 10 and 13.

When to go

  • Best months: February to April.
  • Harder months: October to December. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Negombo

  • The sea is rough and brown from May to October, and the beach is average at any time of year.
  • Touts work the beach road.
  • Not worth more than a night for most visitors; it is a convenient stop, not a destination.

Wilpattu National Park

  • Heavy north-east monsoon rain from November to January can flood the park and close it for days.
  • Leopards and bears are seen on some drives, not all; the forest is thick and sightings take patience.
  • Long, bumpy drives inside the park; a full day is tiring but far more rewarding than a half day.
  • Sloth bears are most often seen from May to September.

Anuradhapura

  • October to December are wet (about 225 to 280 mm a month).
  • Sites are spread out and hot; shoes come off on hot stone, so carry socks.
  • Very crowded in the week around Poson Poya (18 June 2027).
  • March and April reach about 35 °C.

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country)

  • Outside the December to May season the path is unlit, the tea shops are shut and cloud usually hides the sunrise. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.
  • The climb is hard on the knees and the descent is the painful part. The top is cold and windy, 5 to 10 °C.
  • On Poya days and weekends from January to April the queue is shoulder to shoulder and you may not reach the summit by sunrise; Medin Poya (22 March 2027) is the busiest day.
  • The Hatton railway was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Udawalawe National Park

  • October and November are the wetter months here; the park stays open.
  • Leopards are present but almost never seen.
  • Flat scrub scenery and little else to do in the area.
  • A good substitute when Yala's main blocks close in September and October.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Galle (with Unawatuna)

  • Heavy rain in May (about 315 mm) and again in October and November; Unawatuna's sea is rough from May to October.
  • The fort is expensive by Sri Lankan standards and hot and humid at midday.
  • No real beach inside the fort; Unawatuna's beach has narrowed with erosion and gets crowded.
  • Crowded at weekends.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep), Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep), Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep): Usually best in the dry months from February to October; heavy rain from November to January floods some tracks. Seasons are from general guides, not the park.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Polonnaruwa ancient city by bicycle: About 10 km of flat cycling on paved and sandy tracks.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: About 9 km on uneven ground at 2,100 m; allow three hours of walking.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: Plastic, lighters and cigarettes are checked at the gate.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: January to April is usually the clearest. Mist can hide World's End in any month, and the walk still runs in rain.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.
  • White-water rafting on the Kelani River: The operator has not published a minimum age; ask us before booking for children under 12.
  • White-water rafting on the Kelani River: You must be able to swim with a buoyancy aid and follow the guide's instructions.

Questions about this tour

What changes from June to September?

The south coast is rough then, and the price shown still ends at Galle. The east-coast version goes, after Kandy, to Nuwara Eliya, the train to Ella, Arugam Bay for surf and Kumana, Pasikudah and Trincomalee, then back via Sigiriya, with a longer last drive. To build it, use Change the route or add days beside the price: the planner prices that route before you book.

Is rafting safe for children?

The Kelani run is grade 2 to 3 and operators set their own age limits, typically 10 and over. Standards vary between operators, so ask to see helmets and life jackets first. The stretch was shortened by a hydropower project and the flow depends on dam releases.

Can we climb Adam's Peak on this tour?

Yes, in the pilgrimage season from December to May, as a swap for the Hatton to Nuwara Eliya day: a 02:00 start, 5,000 to 5,500 steps and a cold summit. On Poya days and weekends the queue can stop you reaching the top by sunrise.

How many early starts are there?

Four at about 05:00 to 06:30 (Sigiriya Rock, Horton Plains, Little Adam's Peak and the Yala dawn drive), plus the turtle or Adam's Peak extras if you add them.
