Sri Lanka 14-day itinerary: the whole island loop
The short answer
Fourteen days covers the north-central parks and ancient cities, the hills, two wildlife parks and the south coast at a pace with no day over 4h30 of driving. The south loop is about 1,440 km. With Majeste, for two adults in comfort-tier hotels with every ticket and activity, it costs about USD 1,709 per person in shoulder season as of 7 November 2026.

Two versions, by season
The south loop below is for January to April and December, when the south coast is calm. From June to September the south coast is rough and Trincomalee is calm, so after Kandy the route goes Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Arugam Bay, Pasikudah, Trincomalee and back to the airport; the east-coast variant is at the end. Fourteen days also fits the long-stay markets well: German, Dutch, Swiss and French visitors stay 11 to 14.5 nights on average (Sri Lanka tourism arrivals reports, 2024 figures).
Day by day, south loop
Night stops: Negombo (1), Wilpattu (1), Anuradhapura (1), Sigiriya (2), Kandy (1), Hatton (1), Nuwara Eliya (1), Ella (2), Udawalawe (1), Yala area (1), Galle (1).
| Day | Route and drive | What you do | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport to Negombo, about 20 to 30 minutes | Lagoon at sunset; an easy first night | Negombo |
| 2 | Negombo to Wilpattu, about 3h15 | 06:00 fish market; 14:30 Wilpattu jeep safari (leopards and sloth bears on some drives, not all) | Wilpattu area |
| 3 | Wilpattu to Anuradhapura, about 1h | Optional dawn safari; afternoon in the sacred city (USD 30 ticket); Mihintale at sunset | Anuradhapura |
| 4 | Anuradhapura to Sigiriya, about 1h45 | Ritigala forest monastery or the Avukana Buddha on the way; Pidurangala at sunset | Sigiriya |
| 5 | Local | Sigiriya Rock at opening; Polonnaruwa or the Minneriya safari; choose two of the three for a sane day | Sigiriya |
| 6 | Sigiriya to Kandy, 90 km, about 2h45 | Dambulla caves, and a Matale spice garden if you want one (free, with a sales pitch); dance show and temple service | Kandy |
| 7 | Kandy to Kitulgala, about 2h15; Kitulgala to Hatton, about 1h15 | Peradeniya gardens; Kelani River rafting (about 1.5 hours, USD 30); night in a tea bungalow | Hatton |
| 8 | Hatton to Nuwara Eliya, about 1h30 | Adam's Peak night climb in season (December to May) or a tea-estate walk and Castlereagh lake | Nuwara Eliya |
| 9 | Nanu Oya to Ella by train, about 2h30 | 05:00 Horton Plains; the early-afternoon train; car takes the luggage | Ella |
| 10 | Local | Ella walks; Lipton's Seat or Diyaluma Falls excursion | Ella |
| 11 | Ella to Udawalawe, 90 km, about 2h15 | Afternoon Udawalawe safari: elephants all year | Udawalawe |
| 12 | Udawalawe to the Yala area, 68 km, about 1h40 | Elephant Transit Home feeding (USD 5.90); 14:00 Yala afternoon safari | Yala area |
| 13 | Yala to Galle, 143 km, about 2h45 | 05:30 Yala morning safari; Galle Fort at sunset | Galle |
| 14 | Galle to the airport, 153 km, about 2h15 | Mirissa whale boat at 06:30 (November to April) or a fort morning; flight | Departure |
East-coast variant, June to September
Days 1 to 6 as above. Day 7: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya with tea stops. Day 8: Horton Plains and the train to Ella. Day 9: Ella. Day 10: Ella to Arugam Bay, 133 km, about 3h15; surf lesson or Kumana safari the next morning. Day 11: Arugam Bay. Day 12: Arugam Bay to Pasikudah, 147 km, about 3h15; a shallow, calm bay that suits small children. Day 13: Pasikudah to Trincomalee, 105 km, about 2h45; Pigeon Island snorkelling. Day 14: Trincomalee to the airport, 233 km, about 6 hours, a long day that needs an evening flight.
In this version the Yala and Galle nights are dropped. Kumana (Category II park, USD 41 in tickets for two) replaces Yala for wildlife, and the whale boats run from Trincomalee rather than Mirissa.
The honest notes
Pace and wildlife caveats, so there are no surprises.
- Eleven hotels in thirteen nights. If that sounds tiring, drop Hatton and Udawalawe and give the nights to Ella and Galle.
- Wilpattu is a large, forested park with long bumpy drives; sightings take patience and the park can flood from November to January.
- Adam's Peak is about 5,000 to 5,500 steps, and the season runs from December to May. We do not recommend the climb from June to November. On Poya days and weekends from January to April the queue is shoulder to shoulder.
- The hill-country train ran from Nanu Oya, not Kandy, when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026. Reserved seats are not guaranteed.
- Whales are seen on some trips, not all, and the open-ocean swell makes seasickness common.
- Leeches at Sinharaja and after rain at Kitulgala; the rafting stretch depends on dam releases.
What it costs

Add-ons

Prices and times last checked 7 November 2026.
