Wilpattu National Park
The largest national park in the country, in dense forest dotted with natural lakes called villus. Leopards and sloth bears are the draws, with far fewer jeeps than Yala. Sightings are less frequent because the forest is thick and the distances are long, so a full day is better than a half day here. The park can flood and close after heavy rain from November to January.
$71.86 for two adults
Park ticket USD 25 per adult and USD 15 per child aged 6 to 12 (SAARC passports USD 20 and 10), plus USD 10 service charge and LKR 300 vehicle fee per jeep, all plus 18% VAT. Two adults sharing a jeep pay about USD 72 in park fees. Jeep hire is priced separately.
Hours: Daily 6.00 am to 6.00 pm; ticket counters 6.00 am to 4.00 pm; all vehicles out by 6.00 pm.
- Book a full day. The main villus are a long drive from the gate.
- Leopards are seen on some drives, not all. Sloth bears are most often seen from May to September.
- Tracks are long and bumpy; bring a cushion for anyone with a bad back.
- February to October is the dry season when animals gather at the villus.
