Wildlife Sri Lanka, 8 days

Four parks, Horton Plains, six drives

Wildlife Sri Lanka, 8 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $1,102 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Feb to Aug, it costs $1,082 to $1,170 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Wilpattu National Park, Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Udawalawe National Park, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), in that order. The longest drive is on day 6, from Nuwara Eliya to Udawalawe National Park, about 4 h 15 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

Six safari drives in four national parks: two at Wilpattu for leopards and sloth bears in the forest, one at Minneriya or Kaudulla for elephants, one at Udawalawe, two in Yala, plus the Horton Plains walk for sambar and endemic birds. The itinerary is wildlife first, so there are two long days: Horton Plains to Udawalawe (about 4 hours 15 minutes after a 3-hour walk) and the final dawn safari followed by 4 hours 15 minutes to the airport. Sightings are never guaranteed; the number of drives is what shifts the odds. Avoid mid-September to mid-October (Yala closure) and November to January (Wilpattu floods).

  • Two Wilpattu drives: leopards, sloth bears, few jeeps
  • Sigiriya Rock, then a Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari
  • Temple of the Tooth in Kandy
  • Horton Plains at dawn: sambar, World's End, endemic birds
  • Udawalawe safari and the Elephant Transit Home
  • Afternoon and dawn safaris in Yala Block 1
  1. Day 1: Airport to Wilpattu, afternoon safari

About 3 hours 45 minutes north to Wilpattu's Hunuwilagama gate. Simple, comfort and superior hotels here are in or near Anuradhapura, about an hour from the gate; the one lodge we name at the gate is the luxury choice. A private jeep drive from early afternoon until dusk, through forest and the villus. The park is big and the trees are thick; leopards and bears are seen on some drives, not all.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Wilpattu National Park, about 3 h 45 min, 170 km
    Activities, included:
    Wilpattu safari (private jeep)
  2. Day 2: Wilpattu, dawn drive

A second drive from 06:00, when the light is good and the park is quietest, back by late morning. Sloth bears are seen most from May to September. The afternoon is free at your hotel; a longer full-day drive with a packed lunch can replace both and is more rewarding here, though tiring.

    Activities, included:
    Wilpattu safari (private jeep)
    Optional extras, not included:
Naturalist guide for your safari ($13 per person for two)
  3. Day 3: To Habarana, elephant safari

About 2 hours 30 minutes via Anuradhapura to the Sigiriya and Habarana area. At 15:00 a private jeep to Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, chosen on the day; the Gathering peaks in August and September, and herds are small from November to May.

    Road:
Wilpattu National Park to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 2 h 30 min, 100 km
    Optional extras, not included:
Slender loris night walk, Sigiriya ($22 per person for two)
  4. Day 4: Sigiriya Rock, then Kandy

Sigiriya Rock at the 07:00 counter opening, 2 to 3 hours, or a second elephant drive at Kaudulla or Hurulu instead. Then 2 hours 45 minutes to Kandy and the 18:30 puja at the Temple of the Tooth.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Kandy, about 2 h 45 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
  5. Day 5: Up to Nuwara Eliya

About 2 hours 45 minutes over the Ramboda Pass. Victoria Park in Nuwara Eliya holds migrant birds in winter, including pied thrush and Kashmir flycatcher. Early to bed: tomorrow starts at 05:00 and dawn on the plains can be 5 °C.

    Road:
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, about 2 h 45 min, 76 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
  6. Day 6: Horton Plains at dawn, then Udawalawe

Horton Plains from first light: sambar near the entrance, the 9 km loop to World's End, and endemics such as the Sri Lanka whistling thrush if you are lucky. Then the long drive down via Haputale to Udawalawe, about 4 hours 15 minutes, accepted because it keeps both parks in. Feeding time at the Elephant Transit Home in the late afternoon.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Udawalawe National Park, about 4 h 15 min, 140 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home
  7. Day 7: Udawalawe dawn drive, Yala afternoon

A 06:00 Udawalawe drive: elephants are usually seen across the open scrub, plus raptors and water birds. Drive 1 hour 40 minutes to Tissamaharama for a 14:30 safari in Yala Block 1, where leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and jeeps bunch at sightings.

    Road:
Udawalawe National Park to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 1 h 45 min, 68 km
  8. Day 8: Yala at dawn, then the airport

A 05:30 Yala drive of about 3 hours, or Bundala for water birds and flamingos from September to March. Then about 4 hours 15 minutes by expressway to the airport, for flights after about 16:00. In season, add a night at Mirissa for a whale boat.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 4 h 15 min, 278 km
    Optional extras, not included:
Bundala bird safari (private jeep) ($61 per person for two), Whale watching from Mirissa ($60 per person for two)

Good to know

Pace

Wildlife first: day 6 is about 4 hours 15 minutes of driving after a 3-hour walk, and day 8 is 4 hours 15 minutes after a dawn safari. Six early starts.

When to go

  • Best months: February to August.
  • Harder months: September to January. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Wilpattu National Park

  • Heavy north-east monsoon rain from November to January can flood the park and close it for days.
  • Leopards and bears are seen on some drives, not all; the forest is thick and sightings take patience.
  • Long, bumpy drives inside the park; a full day is tiring but far more rewarding than a half day.
  • Sloth bears are most often seen from May to September.

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Udawalawe National Park

  • October and November are the wetter months here; the park stays open.
  • Leopards are present but almost never seen.
  • Flat scrub scenery and little else to do in the area.
  • A good substitute when Yala's main blocks close in September and October.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep), Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep), Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Wilpattu safari (private jeep): Usually best in the dry months from February to October; heavy rain from November to January floods some tracks. Seasons are from general guides, not the park.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: About 9 km on uneven ground at 2,100 m; allow three hours of walking.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: Plastic, lighters and cigarettes are checked at the gate.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: January to April is usually the clearest. Mist can hide World's End in any month, and the walk still runs in rain.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Questions about this tour

How likely is a leopard?

Leopards are seen on some drives, not all, in Yala's Block 1 and at Wilpattu, where sightings are less dense. No sighting is guaranteed, and we do not quote sighting rates.

Should we add a naturalist?

A naturalist guide can be added to any drive for a flat fee per jeep. It helps most at Wilpattu and Horton Plains, where the animals are harder to find and the birds matter.

Which months should we avoid?

Yala's main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October, and Wilpattu can flood and close from November to January. February to April and June to August are the safer windows.

Can we add Sinharaja for birds?

Yes, with two extra nights near Deniyaya after Udawalawe. Expect rain most days and leeches; the reward is endemic birds and mixed flocks.
