Hills and wildlife, 6 days

Kandy, Horton Plains, the train, two parks

Hills and wildlife, 6 days is a private Sri Lanka tour by Majeste. It costs $744 per person for two at shoulder-season rates (for the hotels on this route, 21 to 30 April and 1 November to 20 December), with comfort hotels, entrance tickets and your own car and English-speaking driver included. Prices checked 7 Nov 2026. In its best months, Jan to Apr, Jul to Aug, it costs $728 to $831 per person for two, depending on the start date. It stops at Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Udawalawe National Park, Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), in that order. The longest drive is on day 6, from Yala to the airport, about 4 h 15 min. Nothing to pay now.

Day by day

A six-day loop that skips the Cultural Triangle and spends its time in the hills and the parks: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya with a dawn walk at Horton Plains, the train to Ella, then Udawalawe for elephants and Yala for a chance of leopards. Two national park safaris and the Elephant Transit Home are included. The last day is a dawn safari followed by about 4 hours 15 minutes to the airport. Yala's main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October; in a closure we offer Udawalawe and Bundala instead, show any price difference, and you decide.

  • Temple of the Tooth and a Kandyan dance show
  • Horton Plains and World's End at dawn
  • Nanu Oya to Ella train, reserved seat
  • Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak
  • Udawalawe safari and the Elephant Transit Home
  • Afternoon and dawn safaris in Yala
  1. Day 1: Airport to Kandy

About 3 hours 15 minutes from the airport to Kandy on the A1; the Kadugannawa climb is slow. In the evening a Kandyan dance show at 17:00 and the 18:30 puja at the Temple of the Tooth. Kandy's centre is congested, so the hotel is often up a hill outside it.

    Road:
Bandaranaike International Airport to Kandy, about 3 h 15 min, 101 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Sights, tickets included:
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
    Activities, included:
    Kandyan dance show
  2. Day 2: Peradeniya gardens and up to Nuwara Eliya

Two hours in the Peradeniya botanical gardens, then the Ramboda Pass to Nuwara Eliya, 2 hours 45 minutes of winding road, with a tea factory tour and tasting on the way. Early to bed: tomorrow starts at 05:00 and the night will be about 10 °C.

    Road:
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, about 2 h 45 min, 76 km
    Overnight:
    Nuwara Eliya
    Sights, tickets included:
    Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya
    Activities, included:
    Tea factory tour and tasting
  3. Day 3: Horton Plains at dawn, train to Ella

Leave at 05:00 for Horton Plains and the 9 km loop to World's End and Baker's Falls, about 3 hours on foot; cloud usually hides the view after 09:00, and outside January to April it is often hidden all morning. Back to Nanu Oya for the 12:30 to 13:00 train to Ella, about 2 hours 30 minutes through the tea; the car takes your luggage. Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

    Road:
Nuwara Eliya to Ella, about 2 h, 54 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
  4. Day 4: Ella walks, then Udawalawe safari

Little Adam's Peak at sunrise (an easy hour) and the Nine Arch Bridge before the crowds arrive at 09:00. Leave by 13:00 for Udawalawe, about 2 hours 15 minutes down the A23; the road is prone to rockfalls in heavy rain. A 15:30 jeep safari of about 3 hours: elephants are usually seen here, though sightings are not guaranteed.

    Road:
Ella to Udawalawe National Park, about 2 h 15 min, 90 km
    Sights, tickets included:
Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge
    Optional extras, not included:
Flying Ravana zipline, Ella ($30 per person for two)
  5. Day 5: Elephant Transit Home, on to Yala

Watch the orphaned calves being fed at the Elephant Transit Home from the viewing platform (no contact; feeding times are set by the Department and we confirm them). Drive 1 hour 40 minutes to Tissamaharama for a 14:30 safari in Yala's Block 1. Leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and Block 1 has jeep jams at sightings.

    Road:
Udawalawe National Park to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 1 h 45 min, 68 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home
  6. Day 6: Dawn safari and the expressway to the airport

A 05:30 start for a second Yala drive of about 3 hours, when the light is good and the cats are moving. Then about 4 hours 15 minutes by expressway to the airport, so this works for flights after about 16:00. Or stay on: Mirissa is 2 hours 15 minutes away.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 4 h 15 min, 278 km

Good to know

Pace

Two 05:00 to 05:30 starts (days 3 and 6); the last day is about 4 hours 15 minutes of driving after a dawn safari.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April and July to August.
  • Harder months: September to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Nuwara Eliya

  • October and November are the wettest months (about 225 to 245 mm); expect rain on most days from June to December.
  • Cold: lows of about 10 °C, and dawn at Horton Plains can touch 5 °C. Bring a jacket.
  • Packed and expensive in mid-April (the local season, about 10 to 18 April 2027) and on long weekends.
  • The road up from Kandy winds through the Ramboda Pass; motion sickness is common and the road is landslide-prone in heavy rain.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Udawalawe National Park

  • October and November are the wetter months here; the park stays open.
  • Leopards are present but almost never seen.
  • Flat scrub scenery and little else to do in the area.
  • A good substitute when Yala's main blocks close in September and October.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: About 9 km on uneven ground at 2,100 m; allow three hours of walking.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: Plastic, lighters and cigarettes are checked at the gate.
  • Horton Plains and World's End walk: January to April is usually the clearest. Mist can hide World's End in any month, and the walk still runs in rain.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): Tickets are tied to passport numbers and cannot be transferred.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): If no seat is left, we tell you and you do not pay for the seat.
  • Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat): The line between Kandy and Nanu Oya was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026, after cyclone damage, an October 2026 landslide and the unfinished Peradeniya bridge rebuild, so Kandy to Ella is by road to Nanu Oya, then this train. Engineers' estimate for the rest of the line is December 2026, not a timetable.
  • Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Udawalawe half-day safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala morning safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala morning safari (private jeep): Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Questions about this tour

What happens if Yala is closed on our dates?

The main blocks closed from 14 September to 15 October in 2026 and usually close for part of those months. If part of your plan cannot go ahead, we offer another date or a substitute and show any price difference. You decide whether to take it. For the second day of safaris that is Udawalawe and Bundala, or Yala's Block 5.

Will we see a leopard?

Maybe. Leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and nobody can promise one. Elephants are usually seen at Udawalawe. Sightings are not guaranteed.

Is the Horton Plains walk hard?

It is 9 km on a mostly level path with some rocky steps, 3 to 3.5 hours. The start is cold, about 5 °C, and the plain is hot by 10:00. Plastic bottles and wrappers are confiscated at the gate.
