Haputale

Plan 1 to 2 nights here, and the good months are Jan to Apr, Jul to Sep. Haputale is 197 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 6 h 45 min by road, and is known for Lipton's Seat, Dambatenne tea factory and Adisham bungalow.

At a glance

Haputale is a ridge-top tea town with views to the south coast on clear days, Lipton's Seat, the Dambatenne tea factory and the Adisham monastery bungalow. It suits people who find Ella too busy. It is often inside the cloud by late morning, and there are few restaurants and little nightlife.

Lipton's Seat

The viewpoint above the Dambatenne estate where Thomas Lipton is said to have surveyed his tea, reached by a tuk-tuk or car up a narrow estate road from Haputale. On a clear morning the view runs across the Uva basin to the south coast. By late morning the cloud usually comes in.

No fee budgeted

A small local gate fee has been reported in the past, but no current figure is published. If one is collected, it is paid on the spot and is not in the price.

Hours: Open access; go at sunrise for the view.

  • Arrive by 7.00 am for the view; cloud often closes in by 9.00 or 10.00 am.
  • A good option is to ride up and walk down through the tea to the Dambatenne factory.
  • The road is narrow and steep; large vans stop short and you walk the last part.

  • Baker's Falls spilling in silky white streams over dark rock, with forest and heavy cloud behind

Nuwara Eliya · about 5 hours

Horton Plains and World's End walk

A 9 km loop across high grassland to the World's End cliff and Baker's Falls, on foot. Leave Nuwara Eliya at about 05:30: the view from the cliff usually clouds over by mid-morning. It is cold at dawn and no jeep is needed: a car reaches the gate.

    $36

per person for two, activity only

  • Tall narrow waterfall falling down a sheer rock cliff into green forest

    Ella · about 6 hours

    Diyaluma Falls upper pools hike

A drive of about an hour from Ella, then a steep climb to the natural pools above the top of Diyaluma Falls, where you can swim. The rock is slippery and the drop is unfenced, so follow the guide. The pools are busy at weekends.

    $55

per person for two, vehicle included

  • Rolling hill covered in tea bushes with scattered trees on the crest under blue sky and white clouds

Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country) · about 6 hours

    Pekoe Trail guided stage

One stage of the 300 km, 22-stage Pekoe Trail through tea estates, villages and forest, walked with a local guide. A stage takes four to seven hours. Some stages close after landslides; we check the trail's alert page before every departure.

    $90

per person for two, activity only

  • Long factory troughs filled with fresh green tea leaves beneath steel beams and blue-lit windows

    Ella · about 1.5 hours

    Tea factory tour and tasting

A guided walk through a working factory to see withering, rolling, fermenting and firing, followed by a tasting. The Uva Halpewatte factory above Ella is the one we price; factories near Nuwara Eliya (Pedro, Damro Labookellie) offer similar tours, some free. Machines run on weekdays; Sundays and poya days are often quiet.

Bed and breakfast unless the itinerary says otherwise. These are planning rates built from public prices. Choose your dates and the booker shows the price for them; if a rate changes while you are booking, nothing is booked and you see the new price first. Once you book, your booking keeps its price. On a multi-day trip our 8% planning fee is added to the hotel and vehicle cost, as its own line.

Few hotels here, so treat the superior and luxury rates as rough figures. Thotalagala costs about twice the luxury rate, and our prices do not cover it. Haputale is often misty; the views the town is known for are not guaranteed.
