Sri Lanka honeymoon: route, season and cost

The short answer

The honeymoon version of Sri Lanka is the classic loop at a slower pace: two nights at most stops, one or two wildlife drives, the hill train and three nights on the coast that is calm for your dates. With Majeste, nine days in 4-star hotels costs about USD 1,259 per person and in 5-star or top boutique hotels about USD 1,751 in shoulder season, as of 7 November 2026.

When to go

Pick the coast first. From December to April the south and west coasts are calm, Mirissa's whale boats run and the hills are at their clearest; it is also peak season, with hotel rates about 1.6 times the base from 10 January to 31 March and about double from 21 December to 9 January. From May to September the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah) is calm and the south is rough; hotel prices in the centre and hills are about 15% lower from May to October, except from mid-July to August at Sigiriya, Kandy and Yala, when they reach peak level. April and the first three weeks of December are the quiet middle: shoulder rates and workable weather on the south coast. October is the wettest month and the one to avoid.

Two dates to know: compulsory gala dinners on 24 and 31 December at most resort hotels (USD 70 per adult at Weligama Bay Resort; USD 178 and 243 at a 5-star in Hambantota, on one reseller page), which we add as an estimated line, and festive minimum stays of 3 to 5 nights. Full-moon Poya days are alcohol-free by law, twelve or thirteen times a year.

A route that does not feel like a tour

Nine days, four stops, two longer driving days (the first, and the hills-to-coast day). Night stops: Sigiriya (2), Kandy or a tea bungalow near Hatton (1), Ella (2), south coast (3).

A route that does not feel like a tour
DaysStopWhat you do
1 to 2Sigiriya, 145 km and about 3h45 from the airportPidurangala at sunset; Sigiriya Rock at 07:00; a village lunch by catamaran; an afternoon elephant safari (July to October for the Gathering; Udawalawe is the better elephant park in other months)
3Kandy, about 2h45, or Hatton tea country, a further 2h15Temple of the Tooth evening service and Peradeniya gardens; or a tea bungalow with an estate walk and nothing to do
4 to 5Ella, by road to Nanu Oya then the train, about 2h30Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak at sunrise; a cooking class; the Flying Ravana zipline if that is your thing
6 to 9Tangalle, Mirissa or Galle, 3h15 to 4h15 from Ella, broken by a safari stopA Yala or Udawalawe safari on the way; whale boat at 06:30 (November to April); Galle Fort at sunset; the airport is 2h15 (Galle) to 3h15 (Tangalle) by expressway

Hotels by tier, with example rates

Our prices use four tiers and name example hotels 'or similar'; if a named hotel is full we book one of the same standard in the same area and tell you which. Planning rates per double room per night, bed and breakfast, taxes and service included, shoulder season: Sigiriya superior USD 110, luxury USD 200 (the better-known lake and forest hotels there were listed at USD 300 to 500 and more in November 2026); Ella superior USD 150, luxury USD 260; Tangalle superior USD 140, luxury USD 300; Mirissa and Weligama superior USD 150, luxury USD 300; Galle luxury USD 250, which in Galle means a fort boutique hotel. A tea bungalow near Hatton is the one stop where luxury means full board: USD 450 a night in our table, and the top estate bungalows run USD 800 to 1,000.

Half board (dinners) adds USD 28 per adult per night at superior and USD 45 at luxury hotels. Tell us if it is a honeymoon; hotels often do something with it, but we do not promise what.

What it costs for two

The 9-day route above with the coast nights at Mirissa, private car and driver, all tickets, the village lunch, an elephant safari, train seats, a Udawalawe safari on the way south and the whale boat, plus our 8% Trip planning and support fee on vehicle and hotels. From the trip builder on 7 November 2026. Each extra beach night adds about USD 243 for two in superior hotels and USD 405 in luxury: the room, a day of the car and our fee. Our Honeymoon Sri Lanka 9-day tour page is a different shape, with a tea bungalow night and one Tangalle night, and has its own bookable price (USD 1,268 per person in superior hotels, shoulder season).

Honest notes for couples

These are the limits to plan around.

  • Yala at dawn is crowded and dusty, and a leopard is seen on some drives, not all. Udawalawe is calmer and elephants are usually seen.
  • The whale boat is four to five hours in open swell and whales are not guaranteed; it is not a gentle morning.
  • Mirissa has loud beach parties several nights a week in season and the main road runs behind the beach; Tangalle and the coast east of Galle are quieter.
  • Ella's main street is noisy and backpacker-commercial; stay on the hillside lanes.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.
  • Public displays of affection are frowned on; a hand held is fine.
  • No elephant rides, bathing or feeding at captive venues; the Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe is viewing only.

Maldives and other extensions

Colombo to Male is a short flight, and many couples add three or four nights there after the Sri Lanka loop; the Maldives has its own seasons (driest November to April) and its own pricing, which we do not sell. Within Sri Lanka, a Gal Oya lodge (boat safaris where elephants sometimes swim, very few visitors; the lodge advises against one-night stays) or Jaffna's Tamil north are the second-trip extensions. Prices and rates last checked 7 November 2026.
