Day by day

The classic loop at the luxury tier, with a naturalist on every safari and a full day in Yala from a lodge beside the park: a colonial-era hotel in Colombo, a resort on a reservoir near Sigiriya, a 5-star hotel above Kandy, a planter's bungalow with butler at Hatton, a tea-estate resort at Ella and a boutique hotel inside Galle Fort. Day 2 from Colombo to Sigiriya is about 4 hours 30 minutes by road. Hotels are named as examples of the standard, not as the only option; if one is full we book one of the same standard in the same area and tell you which. Early starts for the rock and the safaris are the same at any price.

  • Colombo colonial-era hotel and Gangaramaya temple
  • Sigiriya Rock at opening and a safari with a naturalist
  • Temple of the Tooth and dinner by Kandy lake
  • Planter's bungalow at Hatton with a tea tasting
  • Little Adam's Peak at sunrise from Ella
  • Two nights beside Yala with a full-day safari
  • Galle Fort boutique hotel and a cooking class

    Gangaramaya Temple
    Optional extras, not included:
Colombo street-food tour by tuk-tuk ($36 per person for two)
  2. Day 2: Colombo to Sigiriya

About 4 hours 30 minutes by road to a resort on a reservoir near Sigiriya, the long day of the trip; a seaplane shortens it when the operator confirms a schedule. Pidurangala Rock in the late afternoon for the sunset view across to the fortress.

    Road:
Colombo to Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana), about 4 h 30 min, 168 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Pidurangala Rock
  3. Day 3: Sigiriya Rock, safari with a naturalist

Sigiriya Rock at the 07:00 counter opening, 2 to 3 hours; a site guide can be hired at the gate. At 15:00 a private jeep with a naturalist to Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu; large herds gather from July to October, and sightings are not guaranteed.

    Sights, tickets included:
    Sigiriya Rock Fortress
    Optional extras, not included:
Hot-air balloon flight over Dambulla and Sigiriya ($250 per person for two)
  4. Day 4: Kandy

About 2 hours 45 minutes to Kandy. The Temple of the Tooth precinct and museum in the afternoon, the 18:30 puja with its drums and crowds, and dinner by the lake.

    Road:
Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana) to Kandy, about 2 h 45 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Kandy
    Sights, tickets included:
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
  5. Day 5: Planter's bungalow at Hatton

    Activities, included:
    Tea factory tour and tasting
  6. Day 6: Through the hills to Ella

A morning walk on the estate, then about 3 hours 20 minutes via Nuwara Eliya and Welimada to a tea-estate resort at Ella; or the Nanu Oya to Ella train, about 2 hours 30 minutes, with the luggage going by road. The Nine Arch Bridge in the late afternoon.

    Road:
Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country) to Ella, about 3 h 15 min, 90 km
    Overnight:
    Ella
    Sights, tickets included:
    Nine Arch Bridge
    Optional extras, not included:
Hill-country train, Nanu Oya to Ella (reserved seat) ($15 per person for two)
  7. Day 7: Little Adam's Peak, lodge beside Yala

Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, before the village wakes. About 2 hours 15 minutes to a lodge beside Yala and a 14:30 safari in Block 1 with a naturalist. Leopards are seen on some drives, not all, and jeeps bunch at sightings.

    Road:
Ella to Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama), about 2 h 15 min, 88 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Little Adam's Peak
  8. Day 8: Full day in Yala

A full-day private jeep from 05:30 to 18:00 with a naturalist, which lets you stay out when the half-day jeeps have left; ask the lodge for a packed breakfast and lunch. Long, hot and dusty, and the most time this tour gives you to look for a leopard or a sloth bear.

  9. Day 9: Galle Fort boutique hotel

About 2 hours 45 minutes by expressway to a boutique hotel inside Galle Fort. A cooking class in the evening, or a gem appointment; the ramparts at sunset.

    Road:
Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama) to Galle (with Unawatuna), about 2 h 45 min, 143 km
    Sights, tickets included:
    Galle Fort
    Optional extras, not included:
Galle Fort walking tour with a heritage guide ($45 per person for two)
  10. Day 10: Galle to the airport

A last morning inside Galle Fort. The airport is about 2 hours 15 minutes by expressway, so an afternoon or evening flight suits this day.

    Road:
Galle (with Unawatuna) to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 2 h 15 min, 153 km

Good to know

Pace

Day 2 is about 4 hours 30 minutes by road; the rest are under 3 hours 30 minutes. Dawn starts on days 3, 7 and 8.

When to go

  • Best months: January to April.
  • Harder months: September to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Colombo

  • May, October and November are the wettest months (about 315 to 395 mm); showers are heavy but usually short.
  • Traffic is heavy from 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 19:30; allow 20 to 40 minutes extra to leave or enter the city then.
  • Hot and humid all year.
  • First-time visitors short on days can skip Colombo without missing the island's main sights.

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Hatton (Adam's Peak and tea country)

  • Outside the December to May season the path is unlit, the tea shops are shut and cloud usually hides the sunrise. We do not recommend the climb from June to November.
  • The climb is hard on the knees and the descent is the painful part. The top is cold and windy, 5 to 10 °C.
  • On Poya days and weekends from January to April the queue is shoulder to shoulder and you may not reach the summit by sunrise; Medin Poya (22 March 2027) is the busiest day.
  • The Hatton railway was closed when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026.

Ella

  • Heavy afternoon rain from October to December; Bandarawela, the nearest station, averages about 340 mm in both October and November. Landslide warnings follow heavy rain.
  • The main street is crowded, noisy and backpacker-commercial; Nine Arch Bridge is packed from 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Many hotels sit on steep lanes with a lot of steps.
  • Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel and in high season can sell out within hours. We buy yours the day sales open, or as soon as you book if that is later. No class or window seat is promised.

Yala (Tissamaharama and Kataragama)

  • The main blocks usually close for several weeks in September and October (2026: 14 September to 15 October), and November is the wettest month. If your dates fall in a closure we offer Block 5, Udawalawe, Bundala or Lunugamvehera and show any price difference. You decide.
  • Block 1 is notorious for jeep traffic jams and speeding at sightings; leopards are seen on some drives, not all.
  • Dusty and bumpy, with safaris starting at about 05:30.
  • Sloth bears are seen most around May to July when the palu trees fruit.

Galle (with Unawatuna)

  • Heavy rain in May (about 315 mm) and again in October and November; Unawatuna's sea is rough from May to October.
  • The fort is expensive by Sri Lankan standards and hot and humid at midday.
  • No real beach inside the fort; Unawatuna's beach has narrowed with erosion and gets crowded.
  • Crowded at weekends.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala full-day safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep), Yala afternoon safari (private jeep), Yala full-day safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.
  • Yala afternoon safari (private jeep): Same seasonal notes as the morning safari; the park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.
  • Yala full-day safari (private jeep): Twelve hours in a jeep. Not recommended for young children.
  • Yala full-day safari (private jeep): Dry months are usually best. The park closed for a few weeks in September and October 2026.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
  • Inside 24 hours, tell us at once: your driver has held those days for you and turned other work away.
  • Your driver's name and vehicle plate come by 20:00 the evening before the trip, or within 30 minutes of a later booking.

Read the cancellation policy

Children and residents

  • Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed. Children 6 to 11 sharing a room pay a small supplement. From 12, hotels count a child as an adult.
  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

Which hotels are included?

The tour is priced at the luxury tier (5-star or a top boutique). The quote names example properties for each stop. If a named hotel is full we book one of the same standard in the same area and tell you which. We do not rank hotels against each other.

Can we fly between stops?

Not with us. Seaplane and helicopter transfers exist, but their schedules and prices change, and we do not sell them.

Is a full-day safari worth it?

At Yala, usually yes: one ticket covers the whole day, the park empties in the middle of the day, and the extra hours raise the chance of a sighting. It is also tiring and hot.
