Day by day

Two nights at Sigiriya cover the rock fortress, Dambulla's cave temple, Pidurangala at sunset, a village lunch and an afternoon elephant safari. It is the shortest trip that shows a first-time visitor the Cultural Triangle without rushing the rock. The drive from the airport is about 3 hours 45 minutes each way. The rock climb starts at opening time to beat the heat and the queues.

  • Sigiriya Rock at opening time, about 1,200 steps
  • Dambulla cave temple on the way in
  • Pidurangala Rock for sunset
  • Village tour by bullock cart and catamaran, with lunch
  • Afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu
  1. Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya via Dambulla

Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall. If you land before noon there is time to climb Pidurangala Rock for sunset; after a late flight it moves to day 2.

Late morning is a village tour by bullock cart and catamaran with a rice-and-curry lunch. At about 15:00 a private jeep takes you to Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, chosen on the day by where the elephants are; herds are large from July to October and small the rest of the year.

Good to know

Pace

Two drives of about 3 hours 45 minutes (days 1 and 3) and one early start (day 2).

When to go

  • Best months: January to April and June to September.
  • Harder months: October to November. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some drives and boat trips see a lot, some see little.

Stop by stop

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep): The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
  • Inside 24 hours, tell us at once: your driver has held those days for you and turned other work away.
  • Your driver's name and vehicle plate come by 20:00 the evening before the trip, or within 30 minutes of a later booking.

Read the cancellation policy

Children and residents

  • Children under 6 stay free sharing their parents' bed. Children 6 to 11 sharing a room pay a small supplement. From 12, hotels count a child as an adult.
  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

Is this enough time for Sigiriya?

Yes for the rock, Dambulla, Pidurangala and one safari. Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura need a third night; see the 4-day Cultural Triangle tour.

Will we see elephants?

Large herds gather on the lake bed in the dry season, July to October. From November to May the groups are smaller and may be at another park. Numbers vary and nothing is guaranteed.

What if we land late in the afternoon?

We add a night at Negombo, 25 minutes from the airport, and start for Sigiriya the next morning. Driving to Sigiriya in the dark after a long flight is not a good start.
