At a glance

Bentota has a wide beach and a river lagoon lined with established resort hotels, water-sports centres and Ayurveda resorts, 1h40 to 2h from the airport by expressway. Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga garden and Brief Garden are nearby. It has a resort feel with little village life, the sea is rough from May to October, and many of the area's turtle hatcheries are tourist businesses of doubtful conservation value.

Kande Vihara

A hilltop temple at Aluthgama, a few minutes inland from Bentota, with a very large seated Buddha, a bo tree enclosure and painted image houses. It is the main Buddhist site near the Bentota resorts and a short outing on an afternoon off the beach.

    A two-hour motorboat trip through the mangrove islands of the Madu River (Madu Ganga) wetland at Balapitiya, with a stop at a cinnamon island to see peeling and a temple island. Boats are private to your party. The stretch near the jetty is busy with other boats.

    Ambalangoda is where the painted wooden masks used in southern dance and healing rituals are made. In this workshop you carve and paint a small mask of your own with a craftsman, and see the museum collection. The carving is slow and the paint takes time to dry, so allow three hours.

Getting to Bentota
