Sinharaja Forest Reserve
The last large lowland rainforest on the island and a UNESCO site, entered from Kudawa on the north side or Pitadeniya near Deniyaya on the south. A Forest Department guide is compulsory and the walks take 3 to 6 hours. The draw is endemic birds, mixed-species flocks, frogs and lizards; large mammals are rarely seen. It rains on most days and there are leeches all year.
$37.52 for two adults
Budgeted at USD 15 per adult plus a compulsory Forest Department guide at about LKR 2,500 per group of up to 6. Sources conflict (LKR 2,700 including the guide in 2024; LKR 3,800 plus the guide in one 2026 page; USD 15 to 35 in operator lists) and we could not open the Forest Department tariff, so this is a budget figure. No child price is published.
Hours: 6.30 am to 6.00 pm; last tickets 4.30 pm (secondary source).
- Wear leech socks (lodges provide or sell them) and expect to get wet.
- January to early April and August to September are the relatively drier windows.
- Birds are the main reward; come with binoculars and a specialist guide if you are a birder.
- The access roads are slow and the lodges are simple.
