Day by day

A week among the ancient capitals: two nights each at Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Kandy, with Yapahuwa, the Avukana Buddha, Ritigala, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and the Aluvihare rock temple on the roads between. It covers the Cultural Triangle's UNESCO sites and the Temple of the Tooth without the hills or the coast. Day 1 is long, about 4 hours 15 minutes to Anuradhapura. The sites are hot and spread out, shoes come off on hot stone, and the pace suits people who like history.

  • Yapahuwa's stairway on the way north
  • Anuradhapura by bicycle and Mihintale at sunset
  • Avukana Buddha and Ritigala forest monastery
  • Sigiriya Rock at opening and Polonnaruwa by bicycle
  • Dambulla caves and the Aluvihare rock temple
  • Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya and a Kandyan dance show
  • Kandy cooking class

Good to know

Pace

Day 1 is about 4 hours 15 minutes of driving; two nights everywhere else. Sites are hot and involve a lot of walking.

When to go

  • Best months: February to March and June to September.
  • Harder months: October to December. Rain, rough seas or park closures can affect parts of the trip.

Stop by stop

Anuradhapura

  • October to December are wet (about 225 to 280 mm a month).
  • Sites are spread out and hot; shoes come off on hot stone, so carry socks.
  • Very crowded in the week around Poson Poya (18 June 2027).
  • March and April reach about 35 °C.

Sigiriya (Dambulla and Habarana)

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms (about 260 to 280 mm a month at Anuradhapura, the nearest station).
  • Sigiriya Rock has the highest ticket price of the heritage sites for foreign visitors, and the stairs are steep and exposed; hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • Queues from 09:00 to 11:00; wasps sometimes close the top section; very hot after 10:00.
  • The elephant Gathering peaks in August and September; from November to May herds are small (one guide's estimate: 10 to 30 animals against 150 to 300 or more in season).

Kandy

  • October and November are wet (about 270 to 305 mm a month).
  • The centre is congested, with real traffic and air-quality problems.
  • During the Esala Perahera (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth) hotel prices multiply, rooms on the route sell out months ahead and central roads close from mid-afternoon.
  • No train reached Kandy station when status pages were last checked on 4 November 2026; the hill-country train starts at Nanu Oya.

Limits and seasons for each activity

  • Anuradhapura sacred city by bicycle: About 15 km of flat cycling in the heat.
  • Polonnaruwa ancient city by bicycle: About 10 km of flat cycling on paved and sandy tracks.

Paying and cancelling

  • Nothing to pay now. You pay your driver in cash when the trip starts. No deposit, no card details online.

Children and residents

  • Entrance fees for Sri Lankan residents differ. Message us and we price them for you.

Questions about this tour

Can we see the Esala Perahera?

In Kandy in July or August (projected 7 to 17 August 2027, not yet announced by the Temple of the Tooth). Rooms on the route sell out months ahead and prices multiply; reserved seats are extra and we book them as soon as the dates are announced.

Are site guides included?

Your English-speaking driver drives and handles tickets and logistics. A site guide at Anuradhapura, Sigiriya or the Temple of the Tooth can be hired on the day, for a fee paid to the guide.

Why no hills or beach?

Seven days is enough for the ancient cities done properly, not for the whole island. Add Galle with two more days, or Jaffna with three.
