Jaffna

Jaffna Fort costs $5 per foreign adult (Central Cultural Fund price list, checked 7 Nov 2026). Plan 2 to 3 nights here, and the good months are Jan to Sep. Jaffna is 374 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 8 h 15 min by road, and is known for Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, Jaffna Fort and the island causeways.

At a glance

Jaffna is the Tamil cultural capital at the far north of the island: Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, the Dutch fort, the rebuilt Public Library, palmyra palms and causeways out to islands such as Nainativu and Delft. The food is distinct, from crab curry to dosai. It is a long way from everything (8 to 9 hours by road from Colombo), very hot from April to August and wettest from October to December.

The downsides

  • October to December are very wet; November averages about 435 mm.
  • A long way from everything: 8 to 9 hours by road from Colombo and about 4 hours from Anuradhapura. FitsAir's winter 2026/27 schedule lists no Jaffna flights, so we treat flights as unavailable unless another airline confirms one.
  • Very hot from April to August; limited upscale hotels; beaches are modest.
  • Island ferries fill on Poya days and the sea can be rough in windy months.

Jaffna Fort

A star-shaped Dutch fort on the Jaffna lagoon, built over a Portuguese one, and badly damaged in the civil war. The ramparts have been partly restored and give views over the lagoon and the town; inside, the Dutch church is a shell. It is a walk of about an hour.

Hours: CCF counters 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  • Late afternoon is cooler and the light on the lagoon is good.
  • There is little shade on the ramparts; take a hat and water.

Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil

The main Hindu temple of Jaffna, dedicated to Murugan, with a tall golden gopuram and long pillared halls. Pujas run several times a day with drums and nadaswaram. The 25-day festival in August and September ends with the chariot procession and brings the whole town out. It is the heart of Tamil Jaffna.

Free. A working Hindu temple; no ticket.

Hours: Open daily for several pujas from early morning to evening; the exact times are posted at the temple.

  • Men must remove shirts as well as shoes inside; women cover shoulders and legs.
  • No photographs inside the temple.
  • Go at a puja time to see the ceremony; evening pujas are the busiest.

    Jaffna islands day: Nainativu and Delft

    A long day by causeway and public ferry to Nainativu, with its Hindu temple and Buddhist shrine, and on to Delft island for the Dutch fort, baobab and wild ponies. Ferries are crowded and run to their own timetable, and there is little shade or food on Delft. Rewarding, but not a comfortable day.
