About this tour

The Lion Rock and the painted caves of Dambulla, done as one long day from Colombo. You leave at 05:00 and reach the rock at about 09:30, after the queues have started and the sun is up. The climb is about 1,200 steps. It is nine hours of driving in all, and we always suggest the two-day version first; this is for people who have only one day.

  • Sigiriya Rock: frescoes, mirror wall, lion's paws and the palace on top
  • Dambulla cave temple: five painted caves with about 150 Buddha images
  • All tickets included (USD 35 at Sigiriya is the most expensive ticket on the Central Cultural Fund's list)

  2. Breakfast stop on the road near Kurunegala, paid directly.

  3. Sigiriya Rock: water gardens, frescoes and the climb to the top, 2.5 to 3 hours. Hot by now; carry water.

  4. Lunch at a local restaurant between Sigiriya and Dambulla, paid directly.

  5. Dambulla cave temple: a short uphill walk, then the five caves. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.

Good to know

  • October and November bring heavy afternoon storms in the Cultural Triangle.
  • We do not add a Minneriya safari to this day; it would make an 18-hour day. Stay a night in Sigiriya instead.
  • The upper stairways are steep and exposed. Hard with vertigo or weak knees.
  • The Dambulla fee could not be verified officially; sources give LKR 2,000 or 3,000. We budget the higher figure.

Good months: January, February, March, April, June, July, August, September.

Harder months: October, November.
