What happens
Small boats leave Nilaveli or Trincomalee early in the morning to look for blue and sperm whales and spinner dolphins. Trips are shorter than at Mirissa because the deep water is closer. Sightings vary a lot by day and are not guaranteed.
What is in the price
Included
- Seat on a boat
- Life jacket
- Guide
- The government wildlife fee, budgeted at USD 20 per person
Not included
- Hotel pickup
- Transport: you make your own way to the meeting point
Season
- Good month
- Does not run
- Blank: neither
Good months: May to Aug. Does not run: Nov to Feb.
Sources disagree on the Trincomalee season: March to August, May to September and March to October all appear, and none is from an operator's sighting log. May to August is common to all of them. The south-west monsoon makes the west coast rough in these months but leaves Trincomalee calm. No source gives November to February, and the sea is rough from November to January, so we do not sell those months.
Limits
- Small open boats; rough sea possible.
