Yala morning safari (private jeep)

What happens

A private jeep picks you up at about 05:30 and drives Block 1 until mid-morning. Leopards are seen on some drives, not all; elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and many birds are more reliable. The gate queue is long in peak months and the tracks are dusty.

Dry months February to July are usually best for leopards. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought and reopened 16 October; closures of a few weeks in September or October happen most years, so check before you fix dates.

Limits

• Up to 6 people in one group.
• Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
• Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
