Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari (private jeep)

What happens

An afternoon drive to see wild elephants on the reservoir grassland near Habarana. In the dry season herds gather on the lake bed; the rest of the year you see smaller groups. Herds move with water levels, so your driver chooses Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu on the day.

The Gathering peaks in August and September; the wider window is July to October. Kaudulla is often better from about October to December. Jeeps are many at peak; the park limits crowding at the lake bed.

Limits

• Up to 6 people in one group.
• Tracks are bumpy. Not advised in late pregnancy or with back problems.
• Open-sided jeep: bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the early start.
